Present to self, thoroughly worth it, tiny and beautifully designed. Does Fish Eye, Wide Angle and Macro and if past history is anything to go by the Macro will get quite the workout.

I picked up an iPad2 and upgraded to OS5, no Stanza is a serious problem and right now I think I'll simply be doing my Uni stuff, traveling locally and web browsing in the iPad2 and doing all my reading on the (never to be upgraded) iPad1. ETA: Or I could just downgrade the iPad2 and not use OS5...

If people have any other application suggestions I'd love to hear them, I've got Stanza, Kindle, Kobo, Bluefire, Kobo and ShuBook installed right now and Stanza was the outright winner before OS5 came along. My survey of current alternatives points to ShuBook as the closest to a successor but only because it has better readability options. There doesn't appear to be anything with library management / browse functionality.
  • ShuBook has good font choices and page layout options (although font size selection does not carry through to each new book opened).
  • It also identifies and doesn't import duplicates if importing via iTunes > Apps > ShuBook Documents > "Add" which I quite like (don't try to import all 1044 books at once btw, iTunes can't cope and starts throwing memory errors).
  • To my sorrow ShuBook doesn't import multiple books via browsing Calibre but I console myself at least it has a bulk importing tool .
It feels like iBooks, Kindle, Bluefire and Kobo have all been designed on the assumption that I read one book at a time, delete it and load a new book after. Since I am actually a relentless reader of short and long works and a re-reader, what I need is the ability to find all the cyberpunk works, all the space opera etc. What I want is metadata. I want to be able to tag works and then browse those tags.

I was going to get the Lumix DMC-FT1 - and ordered it twice then eventually (yes, this is my embarrassing personality) gave up and sulked when the orders kept not working out. I miss having a camera on me though so I had another look around and found (to my delight) that the FT1 has been superseded by the Lumix DMC-FT3 which looks less like a small, pretty brick, fit easily into my hand and has (I'll never use it) a GPS. Cnet says the response time has improved as well which was an issue with the FT1.

New toy

Plus they come in pretty colours! I was torn over the blue versus red choice but the sales staff won when she pointed out a blue one is probably not going to be as easy to find if I lose it underwater.

  • Installed aircon in [personal profile] chaosmanor's bedroom so she doesn't accidentally dessicate this summer - would be the Best Mummy Ever but prefer her hydrated
  • Fixed leaking toilet pipe problem. Well, plumber fixed, I just annoyed plumber with lots of questions about plumbing.
  • Wrote 1504 and 2379 word essays for Negotiation and handed them in then edited Ethics down to 3257 and sent to group for comments *brain melts out ears*
  • Upgraded iPad from 3.2.1 to 3.2.2 and successfully jailbroke it again \o/
  • Bought a spray skirt for Carolina, a dry bag and some gloves (fear of sunblock). Have been paddling many times, it’s fantastic and intend to do it a lot more
  • Ordered Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1 - choice partially dictated by being able to get it for $160 but picture quality, weight and optical were also factors
  • Finalised maps and clue sheets for Rogaine, I admit to a tiny amount of anxiety about how it is received - bring on Saturday!
  • Have two books waiting for me to finish the Trimester so I can read again, oh reading, I miss you so

  • Father is back from gallivanting all over France, we caught up and spent some time working on the new, smaller pond and discussing rock placement and the right volume for trickling water. Very good to see him again :)
  • G. and I met P. and started our November Novelty Event Rogaine vetting, was good fun and involved a lot of walking and picking up a lot of trivia
  • PC is with baby brother for maintenance, both monitors have dieded which makes me sad ( I have warranty hopes for one of them). Am living entirely off the iPad right now
  • Have watched Top Gun and Hot Shots with [personal profile] maharetr, who sadly missed these 'classics' on account of being born too late to appreciate them.

  • Bought a ridiculously expensive plasma television and had the fun of connecting it to various peripherals then the more substantial fun of playing all sorts of things on it to see what it does. We've retired the projector and now there is a wall of sleek, black 'stuff.'
  • Went paddling Saturday morning, got very wet. Also got smacked on the head with a paddle during polo, small bump has mostly receded.
  • Took my beloved hiking boots back to Paddy Palins to find ones that don’t let water in (wet socks are not fun) with the secondary goal of buying another pair of the same boots to continue to wear to work. V. nice man confirmed water should not be in boots and sent them off for a warranty inspection. A quick old-new comparison shows I’ve almost completely worn down those multidirectional lugs.
  • Hike was good fun! [personal profile] maharetr[personal profile] ascetic_hedony, Ginny, the woofer and I did 10.4km at about 5.7 km/hr and got to watch the sun go down over the ocean as we walked and chatted. The Naked Fig is far too classy to be a café and their hot chocolate is not sufficiently chocolaty.
  • Sunday morning was plumbing support for [personal profile] transcendancing, who has dripping taps (now she has replacements, WD-40 and an increased desire to hit things), followed by cuddles and talks.
  • Mother's Day dinner was peaceful except for the bit where Magic (my mother's cat) tried to kill brother R. by attacking his hair (a fruitless task, there is more hair than cat) - possibly revenge for R. nicknaming his cat 'Squidlington.'
  • Traded 3 laptops for a recommission of one, a second wireless keyboard, a promise of a pair of pants and access to a really big ladder - my brothers and I have a complicated but highly successful barter system.
  • It turns out the wood saw [personal profile] maharetr and I speculated was stolen by one of our fathers was actually stolen by my mama who also suffers from the delusion that none of her children owns a power drill *mystified*

After trying to bash my poor toes to death on the inside of my old pair it was clearly time to trade up and since Paddy Pallin is currently doing a 20% off thing if you bring in your old boots deal I went and traded in the evil ones. Don't take [livejournal.com profile] mynxii by the way, I also got a buff with a dolphin pattern1 and nearly got bullied into buying a spork and one of those tiny bags that compress to the size of a mouse.

These are the Keen Men's Targhee II Mid Hiking Boots EU 41, US 8.5, UK  7.5, CM 26.5 and come with 'aggressive multi-directional lugs,' 'waterproof and breathable eVENT® lining,' 'a dual-density compression molded EVA midsole,' 'ESS shank,' and last but not least a 'toe bumper.' *sniggers*

1[livejournal.com profile] kae_dash only thinks you look like a nun because you get the plain ones you know, he'd feel far less guilty if it had pretty colours :p

I bought this summer's Rogaining pants recently and impulse bought

something... )

It's wobbly and bounces and smells like a petroleum refinery. I'm not sure if it's awesome or really gross but several games of office netball later we all agree it's $7.95 worth of good fun. I'm also that much closer to having a hot shower with the delivery of something significantly more expensive and the following memorable exchange...

Man: Hi! I'm about to deliver your system do you have a fork lift?
Me: ... no.

I can't believe we haven't done this before.

They say you can't buy happiness but you *can* buy a lot of balloons, helium and a balloon inflator. We've half filled the lounge and have balloons hanging from the ceiling as well. It's ridiculously good fun playing in it and we've used 1,415 of 2,630 balloons so we'll make it deeper over the next couple of days. People are welcome to come over and enjoy; we should have it like this until the weekend is over..

My lovely, lovely work responded to my request to go to this on the grounds that 'it might come in useful one day' by giving me access to a corporate credit card and the day off to go drool over the tech.

Turns out to be far more interesting, funny and interactive than [livejournal.com profile] ascetic_hedony and I realised.

Demonstration_Man poured bicarb, rice and fake cat hair all over his display floor, rubbed it in, vacuumed it up with a special vibrating head and topped off his performance by rubbing fake fur all over his trousers then cleaning it off with one of the attachments. Anyone willing to vacuum his groin in public deserves special love, sympathy and possibly a towel.

We bought a fresh, boxed one. It cleans dog hair off carpet and is an excellent new toy. All is well.

Went to the International Symposium on Practical Cognitive Agents and Robots exhibition with [livejournal.com profile] shrydar and J. It opened with a talk on the history of the development of Robot Soccer and the highlights of the past tournaments. We heard about the different challenges and saw examples of some of the gaming strategies. The Germans WIN at making their players do tricks.

Then we saw UTS Unleashed! (Sydney) play UWArriors (Perth). They dribble, kick, get sent off for 'pushing' and are adorably cute.

Dr Luigi Barone gave a fun talk on artificial intelligence pitched, alas, at small children.

WrightEagle (China) played UTS Unleashed (Sydney). Some fine goal scoring plus hilarious goal defence. I'm quite sorry the wireless was down because they play more interactively when they can 'talk' to each other. Even so, a very interesting and fun game.

Google "QRIO fan dance" as well for some robot dance action. I have a .wmv if you're too lazy.

It’s a sewing machine. New. Mine. I also now have a mostly finished new test dress (not using the beautiful red fabric until I feel safer) that mostly worked out except for the startling cleavage and a sudden urge to buy a dressmakers dummy, which I will not be succumbing to, really.

[happy dance]

If you're with Vodaphone and know me could you please call my mobile number? [livejournal.com profile] mynxii keeps getting told the number is disconnected and I'd like to find out if it's her handset or something a little more widespread.

Now that I know what a Graham Cracker is and what you can do to one when you have some lindt chocolate and a bag of marshamallows my life will never be the same again. I'm getting diabetes just remembering last night. Thank you to [profile] vegetariansushi for enabling us. You bad, bad woman.

In other news, washed clothes, walked around lake Monger, didn't get fined by the ranger for dogs off leash, bought five chairs for the dining room that have the incredible quality of not falling apart, got a wireless keyboard [loves] and spent some happy hours talking science over lunch. I also visited my beloved brother and had a long and lovely time catching up over very weak coffee as he has no teabags.

I win at life.

Lovely day; am utterly pooped now; went paddling this morning and saw dolphins and pelicans splooshing in the bay before rushing home to shower and bake.

With the gracious help of many lovely people and their laptops we uploaded a good 500 more books of mine, quite a few of [personal profile] ascetic_hedony's and ate a lot of little pink cakes.

Maths would have been so much more interesting if Velociraptors had a higher profile.

I've finally added links to my favourite webcomics on my LJ; have also added 548 books to LibraryThing and slowly working through the rest. Yay!

Bought space boots and tight red tops. Yay boots! Yay red things!

Also, The Reverend Llewellyn Llewellyn Llewellyn Llewellyn... Llewellyn - vicar of the Church of the Seventh-Day Repressionists. So funny. I think I hurt something.

The import of this being that I store things I'm planning on doing in Outlook and if you expect me to be doing something with you in the near or not so near future you may need to remind me.

Cheers, -M-
