samvara: Photo of a sunset from half way up a mountain with a man in silhouette (Sport - Hiking)

What: Ginny and I are going to to do the Bibbulmun track (North to South) next year. All 961km.
When: 1 October 2011 to 12 November 2011 (six weeks).

Anyone who wants to do a leg with us - from a day hike to a longer stint is welcome to join in - we'd love the extra company on the journey. If you want an idea of the places / distances, have a look at this trip report - we'll be going a little faster then that.

Things for me to think about:
  1. Investigate very, very light small 2-person tents
  2. Investigate a smaller, lighter camera (have wanted one for a while now, the Powershot CS2 is good but too bulky)
  3. Probably going to need a larger pack, mine is too small

Quiet weekend partly dedicated to rest - the other bit was dedicated to a 17.5km walk - the end of which you can see here. Note the woofer is still smiling.

15km later...

  • Bought a ridiculously expensive plasma television and had the fun of connecting it to various peripherals then the more substantial fun of playing all sorts of things on it to see what it does. We've retired the projector and now there is a wall of sleek, black 'stuff.'
  • Went paddling Saturday morning, got very wet. Also got smacked on the head with a paddle during polo, small bump has mostly receded.
  • Took my beloved hiking boots back to Paddy Palins to find ones that don’t let water in (wet socks are not fun) with the secondary goal of buying another pair of the same boots to continue to wear to work. V. nice man confirmed water should not be in boots and sent them off for a warranty inspection. A quick old-new comparison shows I’ve almost completely worn down those multidirectional lugs.
  • Hike was good fun! [personal profile] maharetr[personal profile] ascetic_hedony, Ginny, the woofer and I did 10.4km at about 5.7 km/hr and got to watch the sun go down over the ocean as we walked and chatted. The Naked Fig is far too classy to be a café and their hot chocolate is not sufficiently chocolaty.
  • Sunday morning was plumbing support for [personal profile] transcendancing, who has dripping taps (now she has replacements, WD-40 and an increased desire to hit things), followed by cuddles and talks.
  • Mother's Day dinner was peaceful except for the bit where Magic (my mother's cat) tried to kill brother R. by attacking his hair (a fruitless task, there is more hair than cat) - possibly revenge for R. nicknaming his cat 'Squidlington.'
  • Traded 3 laptops for a recommission of one, a second wireless keyboard, a promise of a pair of pants and access to a really big ladder - my brothers and I have a complicated but highly successful barter system.
  • It turns out the wood saw [personal profile] maharetr and I speculated was stolen by one of our fathers was actually stolen by my mama who also suffers from the delusion that none of her children owns a power drill *mystified*

Pip, Rowan and I planned a 3 day hike with [personal profile] maharetr and John coming for the first day. We were going to keep on after they left us and camp for the next two nights then [personal profile] maharetr had generously agreed to pick us up again on Monday.

We started at Sullivan Rock heading South to Mt Cooke. It was a lovely day and we hiked to the Mt Cooke campsite where we left our packs then headed up to the summit to perch on a boulder and eat lunch. The large amount of smoke drifting in from further South was worrysome and the ash that gently started falling as we ate did not inspire a feeling of safety. We abandoned our previous plan to camp and headed home.

Grass tree

All in all it was a great hike, we did about 16km (three of us carrying 10kg+ backpacks) and we saw a lot of birds, a lizard and a snake that slithered off the path once we made some noise.

Snake

The haze of smoke and brightly orange sun combined with the falling ash were not ideal, but were sometimes very pretty as well.

Orange sun, note tiny strip of blue sky on horizon

  • Started watching Caprica (up to S01E05 right now), enjoying it too.
  • Walked around Lake Monger 3 times with [personal profile] maharetr and [personal profile] nm2. 10.5km and very pretty, woofer had to stay on leash, he seems keen on eating waterfowl :(
  • Finished Dark Angel S2 (this took me an embarrassing 8 years)
  • Established I can jog 5km in 40mins - yes, I know I need to work on this!
  • Packed for 3-day hike on the Bibbulmun track. Have weighed everything repeatedly and it looks like I'm going to come in under 12kg which pleases me greatly. Also pleasing to me is the similarity between my checklist for now and my checklist for the Ridgewalk in 2006

Due to my freakin' neck freezing up I'm in no shape to do anything that involves moving so I propose we move this to the weekend after Swancon/Easter.

Sat 10th April 5pm - all other details similar.

In the interest of getting more exercise, seeing more things and spending time with people I propose organising some weekly 8-10 km walks around Perth. The plan being to go to places we don’t see as often as we should because they are beautiful / interesting and progress through them while chatting. Hats, snacks (possibly cafes), fluids, decent walking shoes and woofers are expected to feature.

Is anyone interested?

The Stirling Range Ridge walk was one hell of an introduction to hiking and I wouldn't change a second of it.  Link to picture gallery

Did the Kalamunda to Mundaring section of the Bibbulmun track with a couple of friends, took about five hours and was really enjoyable. It's a very pretty area with frequent sections of beautiful bush, views across the valley and huge interesting boulders. Only snag was stomach totally rejecting food until about 3pm, didn't seem to matter in terms of energy or happiness though.
