My fave's from this list.

8. Tartle (Scots)
The nearly onomatopoeic word for that panicky hesitation just before you have to introduce someone whose name you can't quite remember.

11. Fremdschämen (German); Myötähäpeä (Finnish)
The kinder, gentler cousins of Schadenfreude, both these words mean something akin to "vicarious embarrassment." Or, in other words, that-feeling-you-get-when-you-watch-Meet the Parents.

Of course there's a word for it...
  • Jacitation: false boasting that harms another e.g. claiming to be married to someone when you're not.

I think a small part of my soul dies every time I read a fic where some manly man 'screams/cries/walks/talks/feels like a girl' and I'm wondering what we could be replacing it with. It always seems to be used to mean things like emotional, vulnerable, available, people oriented etc. with a strong dose of 'wrong.'

I'm eyeing off 'sap,' 'dope,' and 'wuss' with the possible inclusion of 'a bit sad.'

Interestingly the urban dictionary breaks down 'wuss' into terms that are overwhelmingly derogatory to either women or gay men. *sighs* I want a better world.

The House of B&D is the proud owner* of Orijinz, a language game where you guess the phrase or word from the description origin. We utterly fail to play it in real life so clearly we should play it on teh internets. Those of you who remember playing what am I back in 2005 may wish to crawl away in terror now. I have Definitions Clues and will hand them out on request. Answers on Sunday.

ETA #2 should read "sold the grease to span soap and candle makers"

in a meeting today it occurred to me that with the number of short, deep voiced men we employ, we could film a movie about dwarves without much trouble.

Is it 'one fell swoop' or 'one foul swoop'? I lean towards the former, I think I'm having a Macbeth moment.

Also: nocebo (no-SEE-bo) noun

This is probably an incredibly stupid question but when Americans use the phrase People of Colour does it specifically mean of African origin, or does it mean not Anglo/European?

Wiki has stuff to say on the subject but also says you can go either way which isn't exactly helpful. I'm curious to know where Spanish, Japanese, Chinese etc. fall.
