  • Resigned from OTW Board
  • Tore/strained left upper hamstring. Took a week off work to avoid chairs and now slowly recovering. Ugh
  • Switched to an ergonomic right-handed mouse - so much easier to use, still lefty at home
  • Week #5 of Marketing Principles - text still v. boring, lecturer still excellent
  • Trialled warming pad dog bed again this winter - we bought two but Kiba promptly ate one so we've embedded the other in the couch nearest my bedroom door. I come out each morning to find them both snuggled up on it = success!
  • TEEN WOLF OMG, had v. low expectations, am pleasantly surprised

I am absolutely that person who makes their dog wear clothes. We're trialling a thundershirt that is supposed to help dogs feel calmer. Kiba hates thunder, motorbikes, sirens, fireworks and people having fun late at night (he hates them loudly) so this seemed worth trying.

The colour options were interesting plus you can have text embroidered on them so we went for a fun option,. Since the thundershirt arrived during the OTW April fundraising drive we also had a photoshoot and made an experimental gif.

  • Swancon was most excellent, I got the Stargate there without injury to it or me or [personal profile] chaosmanor plus we won a Tin Duck for the Stargate \o/
  • Much love to brother J who loaned out his ute to make transport possible.
  • Visited the gaming room, met some lovely people, went to some panels... Gail Simone on writing genderfluidity was interesting as was a retrospective of Disney's 'Renaissance' years and a look at the last five years of Rebel Empire.
  • Spent some time with family, which for the most part was excellent. Will never again attempt to explain why the internet is not a magical land where people are gender neutral because they can't see each other. Ah who am I kidding.
  • Kiba accidentally bit me while wrestling for a ball, waiting to see how much it's going to purple up. I am going to retaliate with embarrassing clothes for woofers.
  • Am trapped between Blood Donor clinic who won't let me donate because I have a note on my file from 2008,and my GP who refuses to clear me because he doesn't know what they are worried about... *sigh* so much effort to get stuck full of needles.

  • Kenobi and Kiba mugged a 2yr old last night :( He had a very seductive yellow ball, they picked it up off the ground and we gave it back but there were kiddy tears of ball stealing distress. *winces*
  • Life seems to be composed of tiny things right now. I've cleaned most of my room and eaten a lot of fruit and read a lot of fanfic.
  • I have a new, fluffy pillow and one of those banana ones for reading with - it's great!
  • I've ordered a bunch of yarn from Etsy and I'll hopefully find out what it actually looks like soonish. I feel some knitting coming on and I totally blame [personal profile] littleboot for this.
  • I replaced the AC adaptor that Kiba ate - ironically it was the recharger cable for the phone+tablet battery recharger thingie - which took me multiple attempts and an eventual actual electronics store (Altronics) who were excellent.
  • I've survived yet another week of OTW stuff Six weeks so far… and that's taking a lot of my energy right now.
  • The sunrise is lovely right now, I can see soon I'll be getting up in the dark but not yet!

  • ROAD TRIP TOMORROW!
  • Kenobi's lumps were all benign, the site of the tummy stitches is all wobbly and under observation (by me and by [personal profile] chaosmanor). He is also peeing with less abandon (ie, not on everything we walk past) which makes me nervous.
  • Cleaned, washed, tidied
  • Hung Stargate properly in living room - looks good
  • OTW'd, a lot. [Board] Three weeks so far… [Development & Membership]
  • Watched Episode 1 of The Bletchley Circle, will watch the rest (four female code crackers from WWII come together to hunt a murderer)
  • Watched Episode 1 of Elementary, will watch more - female Watson! Holmes is less sociopathic and more emotionally available in this
  • Still watching The Secret Circle, it's melodrama but has three generations of women interacting, many female witches and JR Bourne as a witch-hunter which given he's playing a werewolf hunter in Teen Wolf is kind of delightful.
  • Watched E01S03 of Lost Girl, that's a v. dodgy plot-line they ran with and v. rarely handled well (not handled well in this case) but am still loving Kenzi and the relationship writing. Yay Lauren!

  • Kenobi is recovering from having 4 lumps removed - he obviously thinks he's fine (for which I am grateful) but quite likes being allowed on my bed and is indulging us.
  • Kenobi resting
  • Kiba still haaaaates thunder and spent this morning bouncing outside to defend us from the sky until I gave in and locked him in the laundry - at least this way he's not scrambling madly up the outside walls :(

  • Kiba has learned to swim - badly. A sort of panicked vertical swim full of determination which involves Kenobi not getting away.
  • We got him a clamshell for a doggy swimming pool which he actually uses. Kenobi suspects it of being some sort of dog washing conspiracy and will have none of it - he is an old fogey :p
  • Kiba has also developed that casual orbiting that means we can walk him off leash at the beach and trust him to come back after chasing exciting dogs who want to play with him. Yay!
  • He also sits under cafe tables and snuffles my knee reasonably demurely so outings are very doable.
  • Kenobi has developed a third lump - this one is under muscle on his ribs so he's going in for day surgery on Friday to remove it and the other two. I shall cuddle him v. scientifically in the morning to see if I can find any other lumps.
  • Both are ridiculously adorable and well loved.

Sunset
  • Pre-storm skyline was amazing yesterday - that tiny black dot in the left-middle is Kenobi running back to me. I took this using the IOS6 panorama feature three times then using Autostitch to sew the three layers together
  • Kiba is getting better at coming when he is called but is far from reliable. He also hates thunder and spent last night vocalising on my bed
  • Home from work today due to no sleep last night. Bleh

  • If you had to rank crackers, Brie and quince paste in likely order of attractiveness to Kiba make sure you remember the apple and beans incident. The quince paste won.
  • He tried to puppy eye me into making him breakfast this morning, I said [personal profile] maharetr is the magic food person, you have to wait till she gets up. He went straight to her door, scratched twice then sat against the door until she got up.

  • Kiba is settling in, he is simultaneously adorable and frustrating as we adapt and teach him how to fit in our household. He has cuddled and played and been the most lovable creature as well as fishing in the bins and marking the couches and walls. So worth it.
  • I'm now getting up at 5:30am to help burn off some of his puppy energy with walks and I'm finding the local park gorgeous in the early morning. I particularly love the scent of the lemon gums.
  • Kiba and Kenobi went to the beach Sat morning. Kiba's first swimming experience was hilarious (for me) as he bounded way too deep after another dog and frantically swam back to shore. He danced suspiciously in and out of the waterline after that.
  • Kenobi is really showing his age when contrasted with Kiba. He's on pain meds and anti-inflammatories and I'm hoping he will find some balance between the constant playing (which is wonderful to see) and the needs of his body.
  • Kiba demonstrated his ability to leap onto the kitchen bench this morning - standing leap to all four paws on the bench. Very impressive. The old honey tub apparently makes an excellent dog toy.
  • Kiba is not-quite-fetching.  He runs after balls, especially bouncy ones (and watching him 'bounce' after them is so funny), picks them up then runs back to the back glass door to drop them and stare mournfully at Kenobi who has been banned from such energetic games.

We have a new woofer in our lives! Kiba is 1 yr 4 months (July 2011) and an energetic boy who can apparently clear 6" fences. We're utterly smitten and will photograph him continuously from now on :p His settings are FULL SPEED and nap... with a gap in the middle for cuddling.

Kiba

[personal profile] chaosmanor has taken some wonderful photos of him.

  • had a cold for the past week - no fun at all, cough still progressing.
  • did the 2012 Rotary Ramble on Sunday with [personal profile] zorana and [personal profile] maharetr and learned many interesting things about Perth.
  • Kenobi had four more weekly Zydax injections and seems more bouncy as a result.
  • Took [personal profile] zorana to a Perth Glory vs Brisbane Roar football game - crowd is v. entertaining, clearly AFL crowds have something to learn... or don't have to compensate for less interesting, low scoring games.

His (speculated) birthday was on Friday, we believe him to be 11 so I got him two new balls and chased him around the house with them. At the park he promptly bullied the owner of a throwing claw into flinging balls for him and had the BEST TIME EVER.

At the park

He was pretty stunned when we got home and I broke out the doggy painkillers. He spent the afternoon and evening either slumped on various soft things or hobbling stiffly around looking sad. I figure it was worth the sheer glee of the park earlier.

I also found this photo of him on my phone from back in June when it was too cold to be happy ;p

Cold afternoon snooze

  • House [1] finance confirmed approved for person buying the house, settlement 22nd Jan unless brought forward by mutual negotiation. Things for me to do right now = 0
  • House [2] rapidly becoming full of our stuff, I say this but actually it is SO BIG we move in BOXES AND BOXES and they vanish into the capacious wardrobes, cupboards and shed \o/
  • Dropped a couch on my finger; not recommended
  • Played with macro lens more; the 'moonlight' Grevillea have flowered and the honeyeaters have moved in
  • Spent a day flopping at my brothers' house watching Mel Brooks movies and the woofer sticking his face into dusty places
  • Christmas dinner with family was lovely, inflatable shark very good fun as presents go and totally justified awkward sleeping arrangements for the previous two nights (nestled in my mosquito net)
  • Have plane tickets to Melbourne and accommodation with a friend for Adacamp - looking forward to it muchly
Grevillea 'moonlight' blossoming Woofer likes the front seat and things with cobwebs Inflatable shark storage, foot for scale

This was really useful as a diagnostic... how does your dog feel about the following statements?
  1. I feel stiff in the morning. It is hard to get up & move around
  2. At times I can seem depressed or out of sorts.
  3. I chew or lick particular joints.
  4. I have difficulty going up or down stairs.
  5. I eat slowly as it is difficult to reach down to my food bowl.
  6. I don't rush to greet you when you arrive home.
  7. It's hard to reach some areas to groom so I can look unkept.
  8. On walks I am slow and lag behind.
  9. I find it difficult to jump into the car or onto the sofa.
  10. I now growl or act defensively, especially when touched.
One thing we changed immediately was where Kenobi's food dish is so he doesn't have to reach down to eat.

..and a bit more arthritic. We've noticed more pained whimpers and post-exercise limping of late so he just started a 4-week regime of Cartrophen injections to see if we can make his life less painful. Kenobi stresses out loudly in the vet waiting room and the vet was very nice about me asking if we could administer the shots at home. They gave me some tupperware and an icepack to transport the remaining 3 weeks worth of shots home in safety and asked me to call in once a week and let them know how it's going.

The Sookmonster got a post-vet consolation ball-onna-rope and bounced around like a bouncy thing when we got home. I was worried that 'is a little quiet in the 24-48 hours after the first injection' which is listed as a possible side-affect (along with vomiting) translates to 'is hideously depressed but unable to communicate because he is a dog' so I'm relieved and glad to see him acting happy.

  • Woofer now on the small doses of joint powder (after three weeks of trying to hide it (being the large doses) in various foods) - have to try out a decent long run and see how he holds up after.
  • Vetting phase 2 now complete, we've discussed and/or re-checked all the question marks - most of the talking and paperwork we did in Club Zing which does a magnificent raspberry raw food cake. Next step triple check new changes are correct on maps then printing!
  • BBQ and combined hopscotch / snakes & ladders game at going away party for two friends who are moving over East to live. I usually come away from social contact with my brothers feeling ridiculous amounts of love for them, this was no exception.

Or somewhere in the vicinity. I picked today way back when the vet said he's probably about 18 months old and I wanted a day that wasn't already taken by the many, many Librans I know. I shall buy a lot of tennis balls and some sort of squeaky treat in celebration.

Kenobi - 9th birthday

Speaking as a dog person, Kenobi is a gift. He's loving, bright, cuddly, mad about throwing toys and full of alert interest in the world around him. I try to appreciate him every day (it's easy) and knowing his life span is maybe 15 years means I work to consciously treasure each loving moment.

  • Rogaine Vetting - fantastic weather.
    • We took the woofer and he bounced happily all over the place and made friends at cafes. We met a 4 month old Irish wolfhound puppy that was 90% elbows and HUGE paws and I got compliments on Kenobi’s training - or maybe he got compliments on his awesome personality :)
    • The Guildford Hotel has a lot of socks tied to it, it still hasn’t been restored since the Sep’08 fire. I wanted to add a sock but wasn't quite up for hiking around in a sockless boot.
    • I acquired the v. exciting phone number of a potter who may be able to make me the perfect bowls, have an ambiguous date for ‘some time on the 17-19th at the Fremantle Markets’ to discuss said bowls.
  • [livejournal.com profile] _lemmings needed a tall person to help prepare for her first ever rental inspection so [personal profile] maharetr and I headed over and scrubbed things to her thoughtfully chosen soundtrack of bouncy music which I must now acquire..
  • Saw How To Train Your Dragon which was unexpectedly awesome, it was kind of like what Avatar should have been but wasn’t.
  • Lunch with Father and sister J. - my rocks have not been moved from last weeks exacting placement which is pleasing to me.
  • Saw Conan the Destroyer which was terrible but improved by colour commentary with brothers and Az (who has adopted black leather pants as casual wear - I am not sure if what I am feeling is respect)

  • Have accidentally moisturised my windscreen
  • Woofer thinks me singing is very exciting; I suspect this isn’t a compliment but hey, it makes for fun playtime
  • I’m resisting the urge to delay leaving for work for 15 mins because the school kids on the train station at that time have really good hair – I’m particularly fond of a confection I think of as ‘stunned skunk’ and his friend ‘distressed hedgehog’
  • Decision to wear covered shoes to survive aircon at work was premature, stubbed foot does not approve

Thursday, January 28th, 2010 08:14 am
  • Given the number of shops open on the 26th ‘public holiday’ I find myself wondering if it’s actually a white collar public holiday.
  • Mamma Mia was fun the second time around, Brosnan still the low point  - although very pretty (I assume singing is not his thing).
  • Woofer doesn’t like doggy toothpaste, sad face is too sad so brushing accomplished without toothpaste with post brushing squeaky ball reward. Will see how he adapts to this in the long term, it’s only been a couple of days and he already approaches me when I‘m holding toothpaste as if he’s going into mourning. Aww
  • Have finally bought a doorstop/wedge thingie as the combination of woofer breaking in at 5am to sleep on my floor (thump!) and [personal profile] maharetr hitting snooze (alarum!) is making waking up a sort of multi-stage thing that happens well before my own alarm is due. While trying to find one most stores looked at me blankly but craft store offered me one I can also decorate when inspired. Yay!

  • The woofer cracked a toenail on the weekend and we spent part of Sunday at the vets getting it fixed. Poor woofer spent three days with a big blue bandage on his back paw (the hopping, it was adorable but maybe I shouldn’t have laughed) and I took it off last night. My morning routine now involves sleepily giving him antibiotics that obviously taste terrible. I have failed to hide them in sardines and in bacon and have resorted to the ‘down the throat’ approach which is unpleasant but over quickly. Woofer lets me do it but makes the most incredible faces before and after
  • Sick, headachy and overtired for the past week – would like to not live in a daze please
  • Visit from Mama on Saturday, was not the most focussed I’ve ever been
  • BBQ on Sunday in close proximity to a fruiting mulberry (woofer asleep at home on couch) – yes, my priorities are sorted :)
  • Cut the grass on Tuesday, woofer left a tennis ball in the clippings pile and had to shove his face in to find it again – tres cute
  • Lunch on Wednesday with [personal profile] transcendancing, her presence automatically improves everything
