You definitely need to have read other books in the series, have a fondness for the Vorkisigans in general and Miles in particular. Miles investigates a finance scheme involving trading cryogenically frozen people on a planet deeply interested in death and aging. A failed kidnapping attempt sees him stumbling, hallucinating into the run-away heir (and his menagerie) of the force-frozen leader of a cryo reform movement. Shenanigans ensue!

Shards of Honor, Barrayar, The Warrior's Apprentice, Mountains of Mourning, The Vor Game, Cetaganda, Ethan of Athos, Labyrinth, Brothers in Arms, Borders of infinity, Mirror Dance, Memory, Komarr, A Civil Campaign, Winterfair Gifts and Diplomatic Immunity by Lois McMaster Bujold.

Diplomatic Immunity:: Miles and Ekaterin's honeymoon is cut short (with no sympathy from Gregor) to pursue a political disaster unfolding in Quaddiespace. There's been a murder, Bel Thorne is back and the Cetagandans appears to be gearing up for something. Fun and best suited to existing Vorkosigan Saga lovers as it spends loving time on Miles and Co. without really breaking any new ground. I liked many things about it and feel it's a solid addition to the series.

A Fistful of Charms by Kim Harrison. Fun, very cheap, supernatural. I’ve been overexposed to hot, dense adrenalin junkie heroines with boyfriend problems. The series is decreasing in attractiveness and I don’t think I have the stamina to read the next book.

The Hallowed Hunt by Lois McMaster Bujold. Set in the same world as The Curse of Chalion and Paladin of Souls. This has wonderful layers of intrigue and characters to die for; I’m particularly in love with the warrior-prince-poet Jokol and his pet ice bear. A somewhat cranky swordsman Ingrey collects the body of a murdered prince, custody of the killer (a lovely young lady) and gets plunged into a spiritual, magical and political whirlwind.

Blood Debt by Tanya Huff. Fun, cheap, supernatural. Last in the series and a nice, solid case. I like Vicky Nelson and her personality problems; I also like her supernatural problems. This made me happy.

I think I liked this even more than The Curse of Chalion. Ista works for me as a heroine; older, resentful of the gods and trying to find a place in her life that feels less uncomfortable. Alas for her the gods have very definite plans and aren’t shy about letting her know.

Heroic deeds! Sorcery! Saddle sores! Attractive men with [cough] drawbacks!

The Curse of Chalion by Lois McMaster Bujold. Complex and fabulous character development. Oh Cazaril. I have a girl!crush on Bujold and will cheerfully buy anything she writes. This was engaging, intriguing and romantic in turns. It’s a great piece of fantasy with a unique take on our relationship with our gods. Please ignore the typo *gasp* in the blurb on the back and go read it.

Cassandra by C.J. Cherryh. Re-reading because it’s really good. A short story about a lass who spends her entire life being ‘mad’ because she can see the fires of the future burning all around her.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. Re-reading because every time is as funny and interesting as the last.

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. Post apocalyptic story about a girl with ‘hyperempathy’ – the ability to feel other’s pain as well as her own. I have a bunch of prejudices about this so it was interesting to read Butler’s take on it. Not a style of writing I take to well; in a first person diary format.

Kushiel's Dart and Kushiel's Chosen by Jacqueline Carey. I’m not going to be able to read book three, I’m having too much trouble with book two. I want to like this far more than I do. I usually have a lot of time for girl_with_gifts_ against_the_world stories but the starting premise in this kinda squicks me. Phèdre is a lass ‘gifted’ with the ability to really enjoy pain and there just seems to be far too much BDSM type literature on my horizon right now for me to be comfortable. We can talk about fantasies not being the same as real life and so on but I’m overdosed and creeped out and the ‘erotica’ section in Elizabeth’s seems to be largely composed of women with cuffs, vinyl and crops. A lot of 'I'm sick' re-reading going on.

Shards of Honor, Barrayar, The Warrior's Apprentice, Falling Free, The Borders of Infinity, Brothers in Arms, The Vor Game, Mirror Dance, Cetaganda, Memory, Komarr and A Civil Campaign by Lois McMaster Bujold. Beauty: A Re-telling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast, Rose Daughter, Spindle's End, The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown by Robin McKinley. The Player of Games by Iain Banks.

The Universe against Her by James H. Schmitz retrieved from the dusty confines of Books Etcetera1 which was a childhood favourite. It's light space opera about a young genius telepath and terribly attractive. ED: The blonde_peril ate my book [cries]. Thankfully the complete series is downloadable so I'm abandoning my plan to glue all the little scraps back together again.

1A most interesting bookshop in North Perth, it looks to be tiny but goes back forever and has a large range. Beware though; they are stacked in piles as well as on shelves and are hard to navigate. Plus owner doesn't get out much and needs to have more conversations.

A description of Miles and Ekaterin's marriage from the perspective of armsman Roic - that nice young man who still hasn't got over the unfortunate naked-covered_in_bug_butter incident in A Civil Campaign.

Charming and funny with a dash of intrigue and attempted murder.

I bought a large, plush stuffed Nemo and spent my afternoon at work being approached by people who wanted to cuddle my fish. There is a $500 giant bear out there that I am *so* tempted to buy.. maybe I could put it on lay by and have permission to go in and cuddle it frequently.

Weekends should always be this good.

Friday night with Jazzie shopping, playing board games and failing to eat mangoes. Saturday at the beach (I swam and it was cold), testing driving an Impreza, being domestic and lying around sinfully reading. Sunday helping a friend move house and teasing him about the dust bunnies under his bed / desk / fridge and then more, more I tell you of the laying about reading.

Guess who got through five more books in the Vorkosigan saga by Lois Bujold. *looks terribly smug and a tad sleep deprived*

Was cruelly laughed at by [livejournal.com profile] ascetic_hedony when in a moment of incredible grace and coordination I managed to water myself as well as my new rose bush.

Came home to rejection letter for dream job in the mail, considered sulking but remembered had 10 tennis balls in Cyril's boot and amused self by giving all of them to woofer at once. Oh that was good fun yes it was. Oh humour, oh silliness.

Have also separated Elkhorns and am feeling a bit less obsessed now.

I got lent three books by [livejournal.com profile] cricketk and damn it was good fun, I read about a book a day, slept reluctantly and far less than I should have and made poor [livejournal.com profile] ascetic_hedony listen to out of context quotes when I wasn't quite able to not share.

Drama! Action! Romance! Witty Comments! Disastrous Dinner Parties! Butterbugs!

Memory Miles hits thirty; thirty hits back.
Komarr Emperor Gregor dispatches Miles to Komarr to investigate a space accident, where he finds old politics and new technology make a deadly mix.
A Civil Campaign The Emperor's wedding sparks romance and intrigue on Barrayar, and Miles plunges up to his neck in both.

I'm not sure I'll be able to confine myself to borrowing, these ones are keepers.
