- Debating Privacy in a Networked World for the WSJ by danah boyd | apophenia - this is so much more developed than a lot of discussion around privacy online I encounter, I like how the discussion talks about agency rather than privacy "positioning privacy and public-ness in opposition is a false dichotomy."

After some thought and after re-evaluating a large number of e-reader software applications and since the iPad2 was rather crashy the Apple store has very kindly replaced it for me. I now have one that's running 4.3.5 and Stanza and a deep aversion to upgrading it. Yay!

I picked up an iPad2 and upgraded to OS5, no Stanza is a serious problem and right now I think I'll simply be doing my Uni stuff, traveling locally and web browsing in the iPad2 and doing all my reading on the (never to be upgraded) iPad1. ETA: Or I could just downgrade the iPad2 and not use OS5...
If people have any other application suggestions I'd love to hear them, I've got Stanza, Kindle, Kobo, Bluefire, Kobo and ShuBook installed right now and Stanza was the outright winner before OS5 came along. My survey of current alternatives points to ShuBook as the closest to a successor but only because it has better readability options. There doesn't appear to be anything with library management / browse functionality.

- ShuBook has good font choices and page layout options (although font size selection does not carry through to each new book opened).
- It also identifies and doesn't import duplicates if importing via iTunes > Apps > ShuBook Documents > "Add" which I quite like (don't try to import all 1044 books at once btw, iTunes can't cope and starts throwing memory errors).
- To my sorrow ShuBook doesn't import multiple books via browsing Calibre but I console myself at least it has a bulk importing tool .

Hiya,
I am so uncomfortable with your 'legal name' policy that I am unable to use your service.
This has already been discussed extensively by people far more articulate than I, so I'm not sure what I can add to this debate.
There is no way I am going to use my (gendered) legal name to interact in public on any matter more significant than how I feel about the weather.
I experience your policy as an expression of male privilege and find it personally silencing.
Cheers, Me

- Asked work if I could go part-time for a month on Wednesday last week. Got headhunted on Thursday for different role (unrelated six week thing) and instead of working for 2.5 days per week I am now working on implementing Oracle EAM - yay! *frantically sources white papers*
- Solar Hot Water dude called at 7:55am and apologised for waking me up - I said ‘it’s OK, I’m walking to work’ and we negotiated on when he should turn up to look at our system. He wants to see it not working so we have to turn the booster off and wait for it to cool down again. The bit that irritated me was how he kept assuming I would be home every day he suggested as if me going to work today was some sort of aberration - what part of ’I work’ could he not hear?
- Thinkgeek are selling green-red lasers pointers - I want one for playtime (because... LASER POINTER) and possibly for night rogaining. I can see being able to point at things a long way away to your team being really useful, I wonder if this breaks the spirit of rogaining.

As the ridiculously happy owner of a new kayak clearly I need a camera I can take with me that doesn't mind getting splooshed so I've been scouting.
- Olympus Mju Tough 8010 - 14 MPix, 5 x optical zoom, waterproof to 10m, 1.8G internal memory, 215g ~ AUD $500 (slow start and 0.9 shutter lag, image quality 'acceptable')
- Canon Powershot D10 - 12.1 MPix, 3 x optical zoom, waterproof to 10m, ?? internal memory, 190g, ~ AUD $599 (chunky, chromatic aberration, better underwater)
- Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT1 - 12.1MPix, 4.6 optical zoom, waterproof to 3m, 40M internal memory, 162.5g, ~ AUD $499 (relatively slow performance but cnet likes it the most)

- Decide to buy The Demon's Covenant by Sarah Rees Brennan
- Unable to locate from iPad via Stanza built in catalogues: fictionwise, booksonboard – switch to desktop computer for ease of multiple tabbing
- Check piracy options: available in epub, lit and pdf from multiple sources
- Amazon.com selling eBook for $11.09
- This title is not available for customers from: Australia
- Simon and Schuster selling eBook for $8.99
- check player: only available for Microsoft Reader, Adobe PDF, and eReader formats
- check DRM status: according to http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_stores it has DRM
- check DRM removal possibilities: unable to determine, reject as source until more information available
- Waterstones selling eBook for £5.59
- check player: only available for Adobe Digital Editions
- check DRM status: Waterstones site very kindly said “EPUB DRM” which I appreciate
- check DRM removal possibilities: can rip to PDF (as image only) or download Python and hack it (looks complex for non-programmer=me)
- Final solution: buy from Waterstones as I resent the British less and value being warned in advance about DRM. Delete downloaded DRM file and download pirated copy from interwebs: quality high, transportability high, author gets my $, or in this case £
- Email to self (backup on web), open in Stanza, read first few pages to confirm process successful
- Review of process
- Time invested: 2 hours - exploratory foray into ebook buying somewhat complicated, will no doubt get better at it
- Dislike having to switch from iPad to desktop
- Dislike not knowing what reader/DRM combinations existed for EPUB files – feel decision making slow and possibly flawed
- Unable to find a legal eBook for Stanza - dislike DRM intensely
