Had dinner at Sandrino's with [profile] haunted_attics, J., [personal profile] maharetr and N. and did that thing where you read the entire menu, try to decide between three things you really want then impulse order a fourth thing at the last second. The ravioli was very nice, so was the sticky date pudding, shall have to try it again when I don't have a cold.

We settled in at a table at the Fly by Night and listened to Schvendez who sang some melancholy, angry and whimsical songs. The woman singer has a nice, strong, dark voice and they suffer from 'young band' syndrome in that I don't think they quite know what they sound like in the venue.

The Dirty Three were quite something, bombastic, bitter and nasty and that was just the patter. The music is powerful and passionate and I've never seen rock done with a banjo and fiddle so successfully. Some great sound.

Oh hey, I was just talking about Schvendez having not quite reached their potential yet. They've got their sound down now, they just need to have a little stretch to see what else they can do, I think. And, I don't know whether it was Dirty Three induced nerves, but they didn't seem as comfortable as I was expecting. They were fine, but I've seen them do better. ::shrug::

Dirty Three were intense, it was a wave of sound, it's huge and layered and alive with stinging jellyfish. :) They also played Alice Wading which is one of my all time favourites, so of course, I was completely satisfied.

Also, Warren Ellis is just completely INSANE, I really feel like, ever since he joined the Bad Seeds, he's added a different kind of power to Nick Cave's songs, but then...even comparing the difference between a fiddle and a guitar would give them a new energy, so maybe it's simply that.
