The woofer has arthritis in both front elbows. There is a 60% chance a series of shots will enable him to regenerate: if not he will be living on fish oils, doggy dietry supplements and painkillers at need.

Vet says we can still jog and we can still play fetch if I throw the ball into water. No ball fetching on land. At all. We are going to make a lot of beach runs this summer.

Also! Microchip has slid from the ruff to down his left leg, was about to panic when vet assured me they scan the entire dog.

There is amusement to be had!

He had tuna with basil (very classy) last night for puppy snacks and since he was still a bit woozy from the anesthetic I ended up holding the food up for him to eat with the hairy_peril dancing about behind me like crazy and snuffling.

Excellent :)

Our last dog used to be given cat food every so often (at vet's advice) for the oils. Not sure about arthritis, but it gave him a gorgeous glossy coat.

Good! he's terribly vain. [grins]

I was given something called Sasha's Mix to feed him - it smells very fishy - quite nice actually.

[livejournal.com profile] fred_mouse said she knew someone who was getting *their* arthritis medicine from a vet.

noooo!!!!
that's much like what Sam is on now. Oily fish and the joint repair pills (of the human variety) do work a treat though.
Talk to my old lady about what she organised for Sam. T'would be useful methinks.

Sam always seems healthy and bouncy to me - how bad is it?

It used to be quite bad. Worse than how I've see Kenobi recently.
Sam was unable to jump up onto my bed for a good 12 months after the surgery. He was not confident about climbing up the wooden stairs at Sarah's house, though he is still not 100% on them (slippery things).
Compared to two years ago, it's an infinite improvement.

He was positively sprightly this morning - we might try a gentle run on Saturday.

Poor Sam, he still seems very cheerful though!

Sorry to hear that. I hope the treatment works, or failing that, that the other things keep him comfortable.

Regardless of the state of his elbows he will be well loved.
