What a dureum-inlaid glove, driven by all the brawn of Kimball Kinnison's mighty right arm and powerful torso backed by all the momentum of body- and armor-mass, will do to a human head met in direct central impact is nothing to detail here. Simply, that head splashed. Pivoting nimbly, considering his encumbering armor, he swung a terrific leg.

See! Terrific.

I'm in it for the superlatives and Kinnison's immense manliness.

Bolt after bolt of quasi-solid lightning struck and struck and struck again. Q-type helices bored, gouged and searingly bit. Rods and cones, planes and shears of incredibly condensed pure force, clawed, tore and ground in mad abandon. Torpedo after torpedo, charged to the very skin with duodec, loosed its horribly detonant cargo against flinching wall-shields in such numbers and with such violence as to fill all circumambient space with an atmosphere of almost planetary density.

"She's the one!" Kinnison rasped. "She looks like an angel, but take it from me, she isn't. She's one of the slimiest snakes that ever crawled - she's so low she could put on a tall silk hat and walk under a duck."

Still enjoying them lots!

Still entertaining me with the manly men and astounding physics.

Kinnison arrives back at Earth half dead and has to be extracted from his ship and given urgent medical attention. Alas, his ship has been landed 'inert' which means that his initial velocity/vector when he went inert will be resumed when he becomes 'free.' It's more fun being a nurse in a galaxy where you have to jump into crash harnesses to match vectors with your patients!

And from the gargantuan mouth of the Cone there spewed forth a miles-thick column of energy so raw, so stark, so incomprehensibly violent that is must have been seen to be even dimply appreciated. It simply cannot be described.

Terribly British and well worth reading; rather enjoyed Virgil's ride in a Rigellian leisure vehicle.

Is terribly british and factoring in having been copyrighted in 1948 is good fun (I will forgive certain scientific and plot inconsistencies).

Oh those manly men!

I'm having an urge to read more Biggles.

The woofer inveigled me down to the beach with scathing commentary and bribes (wet tennis balls - "Oooh!"). Am very pleased, made the distance I wanted and back again and felt good. Got wet through and went book shopping after, now have 4 of the E.E. 'Doc' Smith Lensman novels that I've been eyeing off for a while and a couple of books of short stories.
