I checked back through my emails.

On Jan 30th, they announced they were changing things so people would be easier to find, and that I could opt out on my privacy settings. This was two weeks before the changes rolled out.

They didn't spell out that suddenly my purchases would become visible to the world. I would have liked to have known that in advance.

Hmm, artisan dildos? Well, it is your birthday soon. Obviously, we need to have a loud and bracing sex toy conversation, next time we do grocery shopping, just to make sure I choose the right kind of dildo.

I don't know that the "no notifications" thing is really accurate -- I got an email about it from Etsy about a month ago, and I buy there but don't sell. But I don't really care if someone can tell that I bought earrings for my aunt, so my concern level about the whole business is low enough that I rolled my eyes and didn't look into it very far.

I will be unsurprised if there's a shitstorm, though. Every time someone tries to nail social networking onto an otherwise functional website, you get a shitstorm.

I probably still have it somewhere, too. *pokes gmail* Yep:

Hello!

We recently launched a new feature, Circles, that lets you connect with other people on Etsy. When you add someone to your Etsy circle, you can follow along with their favorites in your activity feed. It's illuminating!

Right now it's hard to find people you know on Etsy, and that's sad. Well, we're changing that. We're making it easy to connect your email address book to Etsy, so we can find people you know who are also members.

(If you don't want people you know to be able to find you, you will be able easily to opt out through your account privacy settings.)

We're letting you know about this in advance, and will be launching this feature in mid-February.

We have also revised our Privacy Policy in anticipation of this feature. You can review our Privacy Policy here: http://www.etsy.com/policy/privacy

If you have any questions or comments, please visit http://www.etsy.com/contact to get in touch.

You're receiving this email because you registered on Etsy.com with this email address.

Thanks!

That was dated January 30, 2011.

Yeah, I think adding social networking is silly. It's a great site for what it is, tacking on other stuff doesn't make much sense to me.

Yeah, I remember reading it and thinking it probably meant that sooner or later there was going to be more Massive Privacywank. But that at least this time I wasn't engaged enough with the site to have to be emotionally involved.
