... we're not so much regarded as 'ill' as 'a bit yucky' I think... it depends on who you ask of course and I've a very queer friendly social group so I'm kind of living in a protective bubble.
We have a thing where same-sex de facto relationships are recognised for the purposes of joint social security and veterans' entitlements, employment entitlements, superannuation, workers' compensation, joint access to the Medicare Safety Net, hospital visitation, immigration, inheritance rights, and the ability to file a joint tax return. Which is good!
Most States and Territories also have arrangements for shared parenting and some even have provisions for adoption and IFV.
There have been bills put forward in 2006, 2008 and 2009 to change the Marriage Act to remove the 'man and woman' bit and I'm looking forward to the Australian Greens doing it again after the election on 21 August.
Meanwhile I have seen several straight friends get married and creatively 'adjust' the marriage ceremony to indicate that while they have to use the words, they don't support them.

My first reaction was "huh? that was unexpected." second was "whee!"

Would be nice if the ministers stopped saying homosexuality is an illness.
One step at a time I guess?
:P
What is the situation on Australia? Is it that the idea would not gain acceptance or just not brought yet?
