The Livewire - Winter 24 Hour Rogaine - - 26th & 27th of June 2010

Entries are now open - eeeeiee! Excitement! This all points to it being an excitingly hilly course :)

It’s that time of the year when all Rogainers get serious about their sport and aim for their highest possible score. This is the event that will just let you do that. The event is set in the bush and farmland area east of Donnybrook, where the terrain is varied and covers a multitude of different land use types, including native bush, pine and eucalypt plantations, orchards, an olive farm, two wineries, a marron farm, a nursery and numerous cattle and sheep properties.

As the name implies, there will be many fences to negotiate, some live and some not (but we won’t be telling you which ones are off). By the same token, there will be many gates in the fences, so route choice will be a strategic part of course planning. There will be many “Excellent Scenic Views” to be enjoyed from various parts of the event area, so let’s hope that the weather does the right thing and provides you with the visibility to enjoy the scenery. Kangaroos and emus are also plentiful, and there is a great variety of bird life, especially water birds.

There is only 400 m of unsealed road to travel on to reach the hash house site, so there are no excuses for not coming along to enjoy this scenic event, even if you do not get any further than one of the cellar doors.

What do they raise on marron farms?

This looks like so much fun. I am envious.

Marron - a species of freshwater crayfish, smaller than lobsters, bigger than yabbies, prettier than weta. They are raised in dams and I'm told if they don't like the conditions, they will walk off and find a nicer place to live. I suspect this is an urban myth but it is one I really hope is true.

Me and Pip are planning to half kill ourselves and go for max possible distance + points. It's gonna be AWESOME!

Man, I wanna go to Australia. *pouts* I wish the weather would clear up here so we could spend some more time on bicycles, but the last few weeks it's been a lot of intermittent rain and not enough Epic Bicycle Tiem Nao.

I don't eat anything with an exoskeleton, but those def. look tastier than crawdads.

I think a pair of heavy leather gloves and you won't have to worry about which electric fences are on. *GRIN*

'most isolated capital city in the world' - I wouldn't visit! Now is probably not the time to mention the Munda Biddi bike trail though *grins*

I'll eat anything that isn't rockmelon (cantaloupe), fresh green capsicum (pepper) - both taste preferences, not allergies. Marron are supposed to be nicer than lobster what with being living in freshwater dams but the work required to cook/eat puts me off.

The rogaining is most excellent though, it is a very silly sport and I love it dearly. Gloves - my mapcase makes an excellent insulating device as well :)

My boss goes rogaining and competed in the most recent effort in the Swan valley. I'll have to ask her if her team has entered this one. When she comes back from Africa, that is.
