"But I'm straight, and actually fairly conventional in my sexual behaviour, and there is only so much extrapolating you can do for scenes like these before you find yourself in completely alien waters. So I wrote and re-wrote and brooded and went back and re-wrote again, and brooded some more and re-wrote and finally passed it on to a gay friend for comment, and was very relieved when he told me it passed muster."

every single complaint about the gay element, whether overt or covert, has come from a male; women readers, in contrast, just seem utterly un-phased by that element of the story. And I think that speaks directly to what's at issue here - uptight masculinity and the threat that anything other than cartoon cut-out gender roles poses to it. Which is great, because that's one of the chief themes running through the book. Like, total bullseye, dude!

Awesome :)

The only time at work I've had none of my loaner pencils stolen was the term I happened to buy a pack of pencils with big love hearts all over them.

I'm glad you posted this. I really enjoyed the interview. Bought a copy of The Steel Remains recently but haven't had a chance to read it yet. I'm looking forward to it.
