  • Saw the new Shakespeare WA launch itself with A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Kings Park and they did a fine job. Hermia was a little weak but Helena more than made up for it and what I think of as ‘the dwarf scene’ was hilarious.
  • AD&T and Swancon2009 meetings this weekend, I don’t know what I’d do without my awesome committee members.
  • Bought a mop and cleaned the laundry floor.
  • Marathoned all four Alien movies, still love Aliens the most (because I love muscle-y running and explosions) but was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked Alien 3 which I usually think of as the weaker of the quartet.
  • Wrote an application for a job that looks rather cool and anguished to people about the submission rules *flings self into the hands of fate*.
  • Decided to switch the house hot water system to solar rather than gas and did some exciting calling and spending of money *is limp*

Alien 3 is my favourite by a mile.

It is steadily growing on me! I really enjoyed it this time around.

Why is it your favourite?

It has a beautifully mournful tone, that's expressed not just in the script but the visual aesthetic and the score. It's also wonderfully harrowing - Ripley gets everything ripped away from her, and is trapped in this awful environment with a group of identical-looking and unfamiliar men. The film is constructed in a way that you feel Ripley's alienation along with her.

I loved the tunnels and the 'not anywhere familiar or safe' feeling I got off the sets. Alien and Aliens were much more claustrophobic.

Gas boosted solar or electric boosted solar?
Tuesday, January 27th, 2009 04:00 am (UTC)
Electric boosted (http://www.energymatters.com.au/chromagen-300l-elec-boost-solar-hot-water-system-for-13-people-p-986.html?zenid=91d41c3c65c3818391ec57bd754e354e), am told it's far more efficient.

Depends how far back the energy supply chain you go. The heater at your house is more efficient at heating the water than a gas one would be. But less so energetically overall if you factor in the coal/gas to electricity from power station. However if you're on natural power then it would be different again.

If by natural power you mean the Synergy thingy (http://www.synergy.net.au/Residential_Segment/Green_Energy/NaturalPower.html) then yes, we are.

In that case. Yes. Electric boosted is good since your electricity is being sourced by renewable, non-polluting (mostly) sources.

I'm trying!
