This turned out to be all kinds of awesome. Staring at the moon through different magnifications and taking a gentle tour through the highlights of the night sky is an excellent way to lose sleep. We got to play with a SkyScout, a gadget for making star spotting ridiculously easy (can find Sirius, not so good at picking out a single star in a cluster like the Pleiades) I now want to try the Night Navigator Star Finder as well.

You may also be happy to hear it is no longer the Year of the Potato, but the International Year of Astronomy which sounds far cooler.

The SkyScout is very cool.

Also, if you hold it upside down, it will quite cheerfully try to identify stars on the other side of the planet. Other amateur astronomers will find this very amusing.

Yay for astronomy! I still haven't been to the observatory here. I should do something about that. If you go back at any point, may I tag along?
