Retro-perspective 1/12. Season three premiers this week and two years ago in October the first Supernatural fanfiction was being born.
This calls for some retrospective recs - go forth and admire just how right people can get it.

   955. A classic wee!winchester story featuring protective!Dean and brave!Sammy at their best.  Posted two days before 1x04 Phantom Traveler aired in the US.
   The Winchesters deal with the thing in Sammy's closet.

1. Room and Board by Maygra (Sam/Dean) R
   21,079. Maygra's warnings are plentiful (Incest. Graphic sex. Rent-boy Fic. Mild reference to bondage and dicipline. Horrible rent boy cliches) and this is a darn good story. It was posted a day after 1x05 Blood y Mary aired in the US and while it is heavily AU it also captures some of the essence of Winchester brother dynamics. I give you three lines from this rather prophetic story.
   "For a brief slice of an instant Dean catches a glimpse of hell and knows that there's a demon waiting to spit the blood of someone he loves in his face.
   Dean's not foolish enough to invite it, but he whispers the vow against Sam's mouth and salutes the darkness with a flick of his middle finger. Stare at the devil long enough and he'll steal your soul.
   Dean's not worried about it. His soul's already taken."

   2,393. A look at Sam and Dean interacting while Dean is injured; a painful vision of Sam needing to take back control of his life somehow. Take it back from Dean. Posted five days after 1x07 Hookman aired in the US.
   “And,” Sam went on, bracing himself over Dean, “you can’t stop me.”
   Yep. That’s what Dean had thought and now, faced with it, he calmed down. He’d figured it out. He could run with it. “Right, Sammy. I can’t.”
