Time for some rampant non-spoilery speculation about the end of Supernatural S2.

I hereby predict angst and lots of it.

I propose that S2 will end in flames and tears with Sam dead (for a Supernatural value of ‘dead’) and Dean in the hands of the FBI while hatching terrible plans to invade hell and retrieve his entire family. No more Single Perfect Tears; there will be anguish, rage and a singleness of purpose only Dean can muster. I want a finale with Dean enacting awful unholy rituals of vengeance. A finale where Sam is tested in the flames of hell.

Why?

One: Supernatural = Angst.

Two: Dean has spent his entire life being a good son, a good soldier and a good older brother. He has never done anything for Dean because there’s always been someone around for him to support or obey. It’s time for Dean to cut loose and how better to provoke him than taking the last of his family.

He has consistently tried to shore Sammy up and protect him, I think it’s time for him to fail. He wasn’t able to shoot Sam in Born Under a Bad Sign and I don’t think he’ll be able to protect him from whatever is coming when it comes.

Dean has been continually exposed to this ethically grey area where the bad guys aren’t always bad and the good guys aren’t always good and the only constant is just how much he loves Sam and what he’s willing to do for him. I don’t think Dean is going to go ‘all dark side’, but I do think he’s got a lot of potential for utterly failing to hold back that we haven’t had a chance to see.

Three: Sam has been living in fear of his own dark impulses and gradually coming to trust himself. Go read missyjack’s meta on the subject because she said it far better than I can. There is a slowly developing thread of hope, faith and redemption in this season, both in the monsters of the week and his relationship with Dean. I think it’s time for Sam to be tested and for things to go horribly, shockingly wrong.

What better test than to be confronted with everything he's afraid of? I think Sam will fail to save himself or anyone else and that it will challenge him harder than anything we've seen so far.

Yeah, I don't know that Dean would go completely darkside, either, but I definitely think he'll be an absolute wreck and a lethal danger to anyone in his path. He'll have nothing left to lose, nothing left to live for. I think the thought of revenge will probably be the only thing that keeps him from taking his own life. Definitely no perfect single tears...I think he'll be absolutely out of control. At least that's what I'm imagining.
