Serenity: Those Left Behind by Joss Whedon. Backstory. What's not to love.

Sabre-tooth by Peter O'Donnell. The second Modesty Blaise book and larger than life; arch villains, death defying feats, Willie Garvin’s sense of humour.

Pieces of Modesty by Peter O'Donnell. Short stories, completely over the top and delightfully so.

The Secret to Raising Smart Kids: This isn't exactly revolutionary, but I like the way it articulates the difference between the 'intelligence is innate' mindset and the 'I can do it if I keep trying' mindset. It will definitely affect how I praise achievement in the future.

When I was in high school there was a lot of talk about how boys and girls coped with academic challenges. The idea being that girls tend to mature faster and therefore found the first 2-3 years relatively easy as the curriculum is designed for both boys and girls (and is thus easier for the girls). In the next 2-3 years however, the girls start to fall behind as they are used to succeeding without having to try hard and don't have the study skills whereas the boys take over as they are already used to having to work to succeed.
