Was just as sweet as I remember it but with buckets of commentary which kinda spoiled it what with being a charming kids story.

Really worthwhile fantasy. Re-reading since I found a copy secondhand and pounced.

Anno Dracula by Kim Newman

Set in the England where Van Helsing didn't do away with Dracula and instead had his head mounted on a pike.. A future where vampires are everywhere and running almost everything. Lots of favourite figures to be found.
