The opening montage was great! Pressure on, pressure off, pressure on, pressure off.
SAM:
Sam really blew me away with his lying skills. I like the way he summarised his life “Time off – to deal.” We know where the largest ball of twine is – it’s Sam’s ball of angst and it’s following him around.
I REALLY liked the way Diana told Sam about his brother being a bad guy and offered him a way out – a new life. If Sam was a different man, if the last year hadn’t happened, then you can see how that could have been really attractive – cut the final strands linking him to his crazy life. But it’s way too late for him to even see it as a possibility. It shows how far he has come; not that I think Sam at any point would have given Dean up to the police; but I think earlier he would have found an easy way to walk away very hard to ignore.
His calm competence dealing with Diana, the way he supports Dean’s call to send her to him and how he refers to hunting as a job “you have your job, I have mine” continues to indicate how much he has changed since season one.
Oh and I like the hair.
DEAN:
He was still working on the case while chained to a table “I’m handcuffed to a table. Yeah, I get it” – I think he was trying very hard not to think about anything but the case which is very much in character. He makes a series of decisions very quickly here and every call is perfect.
- Have street name – tell Sam, tell him to get out, provide distraction.
- Confess and tell the truth – knowing you won’t be believed. Dean has the BEST relationship with the truth; every time he does it to anyone not Sam he gets the slap-down.
- Tell Diana the truth, trust her, send her to Sam
“My name is Dean Winchester. I’m an Aquarius, I enjoy sunsets, long walks on the beach and frisky women.” *rofl*
PETE: “One more dead scumbag”
DEAN: “Hey!”
THE ENTIRE AUDIENCE: "Dean! Shut up!"
Like the silly noises when he’s waiting for Sam to crack Giles’ password.
THE BROTHERS:
The synchronicity of the brothers, the way they’re still on the case working on the anagram in parallel was great and the way their stories “match to the last detail” made me happy. Their competence, back-up arrangements, ability to communicate in movie references and generally being totally in tune really cemented how experienced and ‘partnered’ they are.
I appreciate it after No Exit what with them being largely separated for most of the episode.
The flashback to the boys talking to Karen – with the silent conversation between Sam and Dean and their fabulous facial expressions leaves me thinking… Dean either had John or Sam around to hunt with normally and they probably did all the being charming – Dean is incredibly useful playing ‘bad cop’ and being the socially awkward one who asks the difficult questions. It’s not so much he’s crap at talking to people as he’s providing the other half of a very useful social dynamic.
The little exchange when Pete and Diana are talking was nice, they don’t seem to waste any time thinking about personal danger. Oh the love.
SAM: “Should I jump him?”
DEAN: “No!”
SAM: “OK but I don’t like it.”
THE SHOW:
I like that this was a character episode, the vengeful spirit/death omen thingy is a little tired and the plot holes I could drive a cement mixer through. The most notable being:
- Claire appearing to Diana (both the timeline and the fact she did it at all)
- Jeff, Krauss/Matlock representing both brothers (when one is being asked to testify against the other) + letting Sam have the note (is Jeff just a really bad lawyer?)
- The ‘shadows’ on the wall being inverted (looked good but continuity would be appreciated)
- Diana having the same necklace as Claire (Pete you sleazy prick, you give matching, unique jewellery to dealer/minions AND girlfriends?)
- The police letting Pete take Dean (suspected serial killer and yet no paperwork?)
- The Impala being impounded and NOT searched? (whyfor were the cops not waving Dean’s impressive machete at him in orgasmic evidence heaven?)
I am also going to forgive the pea soup comment because it was funny.
THE FUTURE:
So, they have a new friend in the police force = Good.
Diana says she -might- be able to drop the charges for this round = Good.
Dean is now legally alive = Good. If they dig up a body and identify it as not_Dean don't they have to consider the possiblity that not_Dean is the murderer?
The Impala should be on every cop watch-for list in the world = Bad.
