In the Impala Sam called for John first, but oh my, was he hurting when he cried Dean’s name. Shortly after, Dean in pale PJs, calls out for Sam and then Dad (it’s Sammy he thinks of first, which is interesting). The colour of the clothes was a [cough] dead give away. I love the heavy symbolism, Dean in white is so... wrong. Vulnerable.
“C’mon you’re the psychic. Give me some ghost-whispering or something.” Sam hears John is awake, but he stays to ask about Dean.
Love the ‘hoodo priest to lay some mojo on me/him’ line. Did Sam hear him somehow or is this just an example of how much they are in synch as brothers after spending so much time getting closer again on the road.
The wreckage of the Impala is about as bad as Dean and listening to Sam talking to Bobby about saving the Impala is heartbreaking. I'm not sure if he's in denial, or if he's so focused on Dean surviving that he doesn't even consider engaging with the idea of him not.
Dean shouting at John, asking “What the hell kind of father are you?” when John can't hear him. Oh Dean, if only you told people what you thought when they were listening to you.
I love the little "Take it you didn’t see that," after the ‘spirit’ rockets past. It resonates on so many levels, John not seeing the ghost, John not hearing Dean, John not seeing what he has done to Dean in the past.
Sam defending Dean to John and Dean trying to get in between them AGAIN. Interesting, John’s all about Sammy – rather than Sam being the oppressed one I think Sam is actually the one they both sacrificed themselves for so that he could leave and have a ‘normal’ life. Did John drive him away to get him safe and clear?
“Dude, I full on Swayze’d that mother.” I LOVE this line. A man with a quip for every occasion. Dean planning on killing the spirit – so brave, so determined. So utterly not freaking out.
Sam keeps going back to John and talking to him, he may be full of resentment and rebellion but they still have this incredible bond. More and more I see Sam being the beloved son, the one who was given the strength to live his own life.
“I think maybe you’re around, and if you are – don’t make fun of me for this.”
“Oh you gotta be kidding me”
“Dean. Dean are you here.”
“God I feel like I’m in a slumber party” (Apt in those PJs too) Love the way they seem to be holding a normal back and forth conversation when only Dean can hear it.
“Dad will know what to do” Sam’s faith is amazing and incredibly consistent. It’s like no matter how much John disappoints him as a father he still *knows* that John is there for them. Or is it that Sam can’t imagine Dean not being the most important thing to the both of them.
“Thanks for not giving up on me Sammy.” When Sam can’t hear [sigh].
“We were just starting to be brothers again.” [sniffle] Dean can’t hear – not that Sam knows that.
“My family is going to die” Oh Dean. The Reaper explaining that Dean will turn into exactly what he has been fighting, I don’t know which way Dean was going to jump – was he going to accept, or fight?
Why on earth does the demon want the colt and the bullet? Who or what does it what to kill? A rival? An enemy? Do the Winchesters have unknown allies somewhere?
“You know the truth, right. About Sammy and the other children”
“I’ve known for a while”
“But Sam doesn’t; does he, you’ve been playing dumb.”
OK, if it threatened Sam I’m willing to bet John would have done everything he could to mitigate that threat, The fact he’s keeping it from Sam, and the fact he shares it with Dean later says to me that it’s for Sammy’s peace of mind. Especially since he asks Dean to take good care of Sammy – whatever this piece of knowledge is, it’s going to break Sammy’s heart.
“Can we not fight. You know half the time we’re fighting I don’t know what were fighting about – we’re just butting heads. Sammy I’ve made mistakes but I’ve always done the best I could I just don’t want to fight anymore.” The best he could do at saying goodbye. Oh John, you poor, poor bastard.
He does so much better with Dean, although Dean asking if it’s really him talking [sniffle] just hurts.
"This really you talking?"
"Yeah. Yeah it’s really me"
"Why you saying this stuff?"
"I want you to watch out for Sammy, OK?"
"Yeah, dad you know I will, You’re scaring me." [he sounds so young]
"Don’t be scared Dean."
You can't help wondering if John's possessed again and the way John can knock Dean back into hurt_child mode is painful to watch. If this is a manly exchange fraught with hidden!Winchester meaning then I postulate that Dean had a pretty good idea of what John was saying - which was 'goodby, I love you, look after your baby brother. Failing that; even if they sell John's body on the black market it's not going to come close to paying for the therapy Dean's going to have to go through - and that's assuming his kidneys are in good shape.
What did he whisper?
How could he DO that to Dean?
How could he DO that to Sam?
It’s not like Sam doesn’t love John with all his heart, like he doesn’t crave his approval and turn to him all the freakin’ time.
Also, darn those boys are tall.
