What I shall be involved in for the next month - kinda feel this should be a private post as it's a personal thingy to me but hey - if you're interested come along.
I love Cecilie for her humour, wisdom, compassion and her taste in poetry.
Cecilie is a Buddhist nun who has been teaching meditation for the past 30 years in North America, England, France, New Zealand and Australia. She is the resident guide and teacher for Novayana Society, based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. She considers the Ven.Namgyal Rinpoche to be her root teacher but is well-studied in the Vajrayana, Mahayana, Theravada and Soto Zen Schools of Buddhism. In addition, she has received direct teachings from H.H. the Dalai Lama, H.H. the 16th Karmapa, H.H. Sakya Trinzin, H.H. Penor Rinpoche and the Ven. Uchiyama Roshi in Japan.
WORKSHOP Saturday 9th April and Sunday 10th April, 10.30 am – 4.30 pm (with break for lunch) The Masonic Hall, corner of Herbert and Evans Street, Shenton Park.
‘What do Tibetan Buddhist 'Wrathful Deities' have to do with daily life, at home and at work, in modern Western society?’ A weekend exploration of how the vivid, violent imagery of Tantra can be understood, incorporated and transmitted in a modern Western culture and context.
Facility charge: $125 (concessions available) plus Dana for the teacher
TALK Tuesday, 5th April, 7.15 – 9.15 pm
‘How does the Buddhist teaching on suffering and its causes support a fulfilling life?’
Mi notes: Suffering = Dukkha; better translated as dis-satisfactoryness of which there are three types. Physical pain/suffering, Maintenance (you eat, you eat, you eat - why? because it didn't 'work' the first time) and the impermanence of happiness (great moments pass.. dammit). Common assumptions are Assuming you are alone in your suffering and Assuming your suffering is permanent. Meditation techniques exist for training self to stop making said assumptions, also techniques for focusing of mind, channeling of personal energy, distracting of mind from suffering so as to do more useful/fun things.
TALK Friday, 8th April, 7.00 – 9.00 pm
'The power of language and myth to shape society and the individual'
TALK Tuesday, 12th April, 7.00 – 9.00 pm
'The Parami as a path to awakening'
TALK Wednesday, 13th April, 7.00 – 9.00 pm
'Meditation for healing: living with illness and working with others who are physically or mentally unwell'
TALK Thursday, 14th April, 7.00 – 9.00 pm
'If today's perceived enemy is 'stress', how can one be productive, friendly and calm in the workplace and at home?'
Shenton Park Community Centre, 240 Onslow Rd, Shenton Park.
Facility charge: $15 per evening (concessions available) plus Dana for the teacher.
RETREAT Friday, 15th April from 5 pm to Sunday, 1st May at 12 noon. Balingup Retreat - 'Building the Celestial Palace':
"However unlikely it may seem, this present existence is the golden ground of opportunity. Each one of us has two valuable tools with which to work this ground. These two are the reflective power of knowing and the experiential power of being. The Buddhist tradition lays out a building plan, detailing how to use these two tools to create from one's daily life a Celestial Palace. This building plan, referred to as "The 37 Requisites", shows the way to transform our lives - and therefore ourselves. By following these steps, the present state becomes a Celestial Palace. In the centre of this palace is the throne room where divine and worldly, transcendent and mundane, become non-dual." Cecilie Kwiat.
Basic cost, including vegetarian meals, is $250 for one week and $450 for 2 weeks. Concessions on application. Accommodation in the retreat centre is offered on a dana (donation) basis and dana is also the only source of income for the teacher.
A word on Dana … Cecilie lives entirely 'by the bowl' (meaning what is freely given in dana). Traditionally, Dharma students offer dana in return for teachings. Let your donations reflect not only what you can afford but also the effort and years of dedication that have been spent in order that you might receive the great benefit of these teachings. Accommodation at the Origins Retreat Centre in Balingup is also provided on the basis of Dana.
