Back to Exmouth as we needed some basic supplies like fresh vegetables and water and had various wonderful plans to do with internet access, more Anzac biscuits and [gasp] the possibility of showers.

I sourced a dive trip out to the Navy Pier and stocked up on essentials like a spare book I never got around to reading, postcards, a pink notepad I dearly love and a turtle keyring to replace the one that went swimming at Cottesloe beach. Also got a long sleeved paddling top because I was sick of putting sunblock on from the bicep down.

Since it was our 'day off' we went hiking at the Charles Knife Gorge. It goes up and up a fair way and I hear there is a good three day hike route to be enjoyed. We found our way down one of the main ridges and scrambled happily around for a while admiring the incredible colours and the harsh landscape. All the plants make do on tiny amounts of water and grow impressive spikes.

Interesting rocks!

The view here is on one of the ridges looking East towards the Exmouth Gulf.

A rock pillar I liked.

Some spinafex and some cracked, red earth. I have been informed in good authority that the correct behaviour when faced with spinafex is not to sit on it, panic and sit on a second clump.

We drove back to town suitably impressed, found HUGE hamburgers and devoured them. The CALM office refused to admit to knowing anything abut marine maps but dobbed in the local fishing store who also, after intense interrogation failed to provide. Alas. They did, however, tell us a lot about how they thought the weather might be. Certain people bought fishing gear and we amused ourselves down at the beach by pretending to know something about fishing.

Also: showering. Oh My God it was good.

And finally, more rocks in the late afternoon sun.
