I visited the post office yesterday to get an envelope to post one of the now rare forms you can’t submit electronically. The teller reminded me they are cheaper to buy in lots of 10 which would be great if I used snail mail more than once or twice a year. The nerdy girl then gave me stick for not having a stationary kit at home.

Are you still buying envelopes in bulk?

I'm lazy and I steal my envelopes from work. Also cheap. I admit to buying stamps in bulk, though. It's not cheaper and I rarely use them, but if I don't buy half a dozen books (books of 20) at a time, it seems that I can never find them when I need one. So I've got one in my nightstand, one at work in my desk, one in my purse, a few in my wallet, some in the kitchen...

When I was working in an office I used to just grab an envelope from stores if I needed one, which was rarely, and then fish a stamp out of my boss's desk (he had millions, and wanted people to take them).

But I don't have any need for envelopes and stamps at all now. All my bills are online except for rent, which I just... hand to [personal profile] therienne once a month. So no, I don't buy them ever!

I have a huge stash of envelopes in a box which I bought about four years ago and am working my way through. I always buy stuff like that in bulk, just in case I need them! Although to be fair, I have quite a lot of paper mail to send - I just sat down this morning and filled in four funding forms which have to be posted off, and I get contracts and suchlike which have to be physically signed.

I like paper mail, actually, though not for business (where I would infinitely prefer email). In addition to the giant stash o' brown envelopes, I have two boxes of cards and pretty stationery. I used to write a lot of letters, and I still do write to people on occasion, although mostly I am a crap friend and don't get round to it. A friend of mine the other day was saying he went to a letter writing party, where a whole bunch of them got together and spent an hour writing paper mail - I love this idea!

...apparently stationery makes me eloquent, hahaha. Or verbose, at least.

I did buy stationary for wedding invites, but on the rare occasions I send personal mail, I am more likely to send cards than letters, and they come with their own envelopes.

I send a lot of letters, actually, and miss my personal stationary desperately. It will be a graduation present to myself, a new edition of gorgeous paper. [personal profile] berne and I write letters, and all my thank you notes are physical, and I have to send my medical receipts to my mother for insurance reasons, and...yes. I buy envelopes in bulk, and run out way too often.

Did you take the stick and smack her with it and say "Get into the real virtual world, hun!"

I do have a writing kit, but then I find the notion of hand written letters romantic, and it was also a hobby I could do in 5 minutes dribs and drabs as the kids needed me. It kept me sane for a bit. I also used envelopes for the budgeting system for a while once. And now I have a friend in jail, so I don't think I am allowed to email him...

:-)

Answer: I buy them in bulk, but don't expect any one to judge my envelope usage! LOL

yes, smack her with your USB stick

Are you still buying envelopes in bulk?

yes, I am, which currently means buying some, using one, then losing the other 99. I, in fact, have to get some more this afternoon because I have two forms to send and can't find the envelopes anywhere. Your way is looking far more sensible about now.

Yes but I mail stuff pretty much every day.

*laughs*

You've seen this gorgeous mistake (http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/03/usb-cake-design-worst-birthday-surprise-in-history/) haven't you?

I wrote letters by hand a lot before I discovered computers, now I find I'm much more inclined to email/IM/text if I can't see them in person.

It's a problem for staying in touch with people like my grandmother - we don't have a communication mechanism in common any more.

It made sense to me!

My 'crap' drawer used to have envelopes, sticky tape, stamps, pens and a stapler. Now it has pens, discs, cables and rechargeable batteries.

oh, that is fabulous!
Thursday, May 7th, 2009 02:32 am (UTC)
That works!
Thursday, May 7th, 2009 02:32 am (UTC)
like you, I just buy a single pre-stamped envelope as needed, i.e. very rarely
Thursday, May 7th, 2009 02:37 am (UTC)
Phew, it's not just me then :)

I heard somewhere, that even though letters and such have been superceded by email, post has increased because now people know more people and send more parcels and packages. I like to think this is a better world, with less bills in the mail and more books and presents :)

We bought envelopes in bulk once. Now, what we have will probably last us until the end of time.
Thursday, May 7th, 2009 03:38 am (UTC)
I get very little paper based mail and yes - a lot of it is packages. That's a nice view of the world - I like it.

Given the number of cakes I've seen deliberately made to resemble bits of tech, it took me a moment to realise what was wrong :-)

This one (http://failblog.org/2008/06/19/pastry-design-fail/)'s quite lovely, too (not to mention better executed).

So then you use sticky tape to seal the envelope.
I tend to buy a pack of large envelopes every time I'm looking for a new job. Often they last until the next time, a few years later.

Interestingly, the laws here actually state that technically, stamps can be used as currency. Further, we sell what are called forever stamps, purchased at the current face value of a first-class stamp, but they will forever remain the equivalent value of a first-class stamp--so today it's 43c, but when it goes to 47 or whatever in a month or two, they'll be worth 47c.

I can't deny that I've thought before about using stamps as a form of a (tiny) bank account--increases in postal price seem more steady than any sort of return on one's bank account.

I bought envelopes in bulk. Now they're all so old I have to use sticky tape on the back!

Air mail envelopes in bulk (by bulk I mean 10 or 20) to mail my grandfather.
Saturday, May 9th, 2009 12:09 am (UTC)
but they still work!
Saturday, May 9th, 2009 12:09 am (UTC)
See that's a good reason to buy them.
