I visited the post office yesterday to get an envelope to post one of the now rare forms you can’t submit electronically. The teller reminded me they are cheaper to buy in lots of 10 which would be great if I used snail mail more than once or twice a year. The nerdy girl then gave me stick for not having a stationary kit at home.
Are you still buying envelopes in bulk?

But I don't have any need for envelopes and stamps at all now. All my bills are online except for rent, which I just... hand to

*g* I talked the last 2 landlords into letting me netbank my rent - one insisted on still dropping by every six months and giving me a massive pile of paper receipts - she really loved the paper.

I like paper mail, actually, though not for business (where I would infinitely prefer email). In addition to the giant stash o' brown envelopes, I have two boxes of cards and pretty stationery. I used to write a lot of letters, and I still do write to people on occasion, although mostly I am a crap friend and don't get round to it. A friend of mine the other day was saying he went to a letter writing party, where a whole bunch of them got together and spent an hour writing paper mail - I love this idea!
...apparently stationery makes me eloquent, hahaha. Or verbose, at least.

I do have a writing kit, but then I find the notion of hand written letters romantic, and it was also a hobby I could do in 5 minutes dribs and drabs as the kids needed me. It kept me sane for a bit. I also used envelopes for the budgeting system for a while once. And now I have a friend in jail, so I don't think I am allowed to email him...
:-)
Answer: I buy them in bulk, but don't expect any one to judge my envelope usage! LOL

yes, I am, which currently means buying some, using one, then losing the other 99. I, in fact, have to get some more this afternoon because I have two forms to send and can't find the envelopes anywhere. Your way is looking far more sensible about now.

It's a problem for staying in touch with people like my grandmother - we don't have a communication mechanism in common any more.

My 'crap' drawer used to have envelopes, sticky tape, stamps, pens and a stapler. Now it has pens, discs, cables and rechargeable batteries.

This one (http://failblog.org/2008/06/19/pastry-design-fail/)'s quite lovely, too (not to mention better executed).

I tend to buy a pack of large envelopes every time I'm looking for a new job. Often they last until the next time, a few years later.

I can't deny that I've thought before about using stamps as a form of a (tiny) bank account--increases in postal price seem more steady than any sort of return on one's bank account.
