I have still only seen the first ep of Torchwood, but based on that I found it had a Captain Jack who was patently changed by experiences between his last appearance in Doctor Who and the start of his own series. I didn't find I was watching "a different guy", just a more seasoned and older version of same character - one I personally found a lot less irritating than he often was in Doctor Who as well.
