Dinner at the food hall near the Freo Markets was interrupted by an employee explaining to a man that they have a No Scavengers Policy as he tidied up a table and wandered off with a large amount of rice + scraps.
My initial reaction was in support of said woman dealing with a difficult situation closely followed by unhappiness with seeing a person who was not functioning at what I would call a high level. I think there is something fundamentally wrong with getting your food by scavenging.
I’m not a carer type of person, I’ve provided large amounts of support and caring at times but prefer to only have to do it in crisis situations: I don’t believe it would be possible to pay me enough (realistically) to do it on a regular basis. I dread having responsibility for other life forms and have a woofer because I’m very clear that I can provide what I consider the minimum level of care required.
Now it seems that at any point in time there is going to be a proportion of society who is not able to look after self in ways that seems reasonably easy to those who are able. I’ve been pretty damn not able at times and have reason to be grateful that my society is able to support me.
So here I am balanced by a desire for other people to bloody well take care of their own problems because I do not wish to take responsibility for other people’s suffering; and an awareness that in a small way, suffering is in my power to alleviate.
What I have done is called the local council and asked what services provide emergency food supplies. I have an extensive list of services, which includes people who provide free breakfasts, $3 midday meals and suppers and I have a date with them on Saturday to find out if there is something I can do to support their efforts.
I am thinking of offering to help at the kitchen once a month, of offering to drive things around and of offering some IOU’s, whereby people I see who cannot get food can eat and I will pay for it but I shall find out more later this week.
