Blood donating time again

Iron count 127; they gave me a pen. Whee! This totally justifies all the bleeding.

Turns out there's a clinic near where I work so the new job doesn't mean donating is going to be irritating to organise.

Plasma donating time again.

Donating plasma was very smooth, tiniest of pinpricks and a rocking 128 iron count. Nearly fell asleep during.

Blood donating, or rather plasma and platelets

Looks like the number of people with the flu right now is biting into the number of eligible donors. It's been a while since the Red Cross have taken actual blood cells, they are far more keen on the yellow stuff, I turned up during the 30 minutes when the computer was down and we all assumed our communication was fine until a nurse asked if I'd be willing to consider donating plasma which is what my appointment was for.

This is far more entertaining than donating Whole Blood or Red Blood Cells as you get hooked up to a machine with three tubes connected to the needle (In, Out and Anticoagulant). Then you alternate between squeezing a little rubber Santa Claus and bleeding, with not_squeezing and having your freshly filtered blood pumped back into you plus a healthy dose of anticoagulant. Much harder to read to. I'm usually absolutely fine, the pain is far less than a bee sting and the only discomfort is the weird bit where the plasma machine pumps your blood back into you. This time however I had the unusual experience of sensing what felt like the tip of the needle rubbing against the opposite wall of my vein. Eww. Easily fixed, just ease it back a little.

Iron count back down to 119. [sigh] Must eat more broccoli - not exactly a hardship.

Iron count 130.

Which is good, for me.

Donated plazma and platelets which turned out to be a bit tedious what with take blood out, scrub, put blood back in, repeat for 47 minutes.

Blood donating and recent reading

Iron Count is 137, without supplements by which I mean I am unsupplemented and still hitting a higher level than ever before. Despite literature to the contrary I can't help but feel that Citrate sensitivity is becoming violently allergic to orange juice.

SUM(Diet + Health)=Good.

Reading... Lirael and Abhorsen by Garth Nix, Darkover Landfall, The World Wreckers, The Planet Savers, The Spell Sword, The Forbidden Tower, Two to Conquer and Hawkmistress! by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Charity Girl by Georgette Heyer. Am re-reading for comfort and not in the mood to talk about them.

Donating blood time again

Nurse: I'll just swab here and paint your arm a lovely shade of yellow.
Nurse: *gets out needle*
Me: *looks firmly in the other direction*
Nurse: There! All done!
Me: That was very smooth!
Nurse: Thank you - I notice you looked away.
Me: I never look.
Nurse: Oh I don't either!

Iron count 134.. it's a record

Usually I'm borderline and every now and then they stab my other finger to get a second opinion (why the left side is higher I do not know) so this was very satisfying. Also enjoyed ticking the box that said I had been overseas and done fun things - usually I'm only reminded how unbelievably boring my life is1.

1 Boring in the sense of no needle habits, income through prostitution or life threatening injuries.

Donating blood..

Visit to the blood donor clinic once again served to remind me how boring my life is. Not that I have much of an urge to have unprotected male to male bisexual sex in return for drugs with someone from Ireland, United Kingdom or the Isle of Man followed by a few tattoos... At least, not all at once.

The network went down while they were processing me promoting much amusing "Damn those IT guys" commentary - fear the wrath of a nurse. Have tiny hole in one arm and no bruise at all. Lovely woman wrapped my arm in bandage saying 'just to stop you bruising or leaking dear' - heaven forbid I leak!

Have also finally asked about blood pressure: Systolic = blood pressure as heart contracts, the normal range is 100 - 139. Diastolic = blood pressure as heart relaxes, the normal range is 60 - 89. Too high means excited, nervous or that the veins are clogged.
