The fate of education
On an unrelated note, I'm passionately in favour of education but I'm also keen on not vanishing up our own rectums...
Choice is a key catchphrase of our time affecting a broad range of public policy initiatives. In education, choice is a major driving force behind initiatives aimed at diversifying the content and governance of schooling. Competition, decentralization, marketization, and responsiveness to local needs are proclaimed as the solutions to a broad range of educational problems. This has led to the establishment of a quasi-market which embraces the full range of government and non- governmental schools that are purportedly competing for a range of resources, both human and financial.
School choice is a global phenomenon. However, it assumes different forms and emphases depending upon the local social, political, economic, and historical contexts. Seeking a thorough interrogation of theoretical claims about school choice we aim to bring together scholars with a proven engagement with empirical realities in a range of geographical and socio-economic areas throughout the world. The symposium provides an opportunity to uncover the differences and similarities in school choice reform and its effects on the organization and practice of schooling in response to globalization.
