[personal profile] zorana provided her invaluable self to a couple of marathons and I have now caught up on some of my shows.
  • Arrow - attempting to catch up and made some great progress while auditing my music collection (now in two folders called "sorted" and "pit of voles"). Ollie is still ridiculous but Felicity and Diggle are so much fun
  • In the Flesh - liked episode 1, not fluffy watching, will have to ration carefully
  • Grimm S03 - up to date and still in love, have forgiven sudden attack of the stupid to set up the S03 cliffhanger on account of Munroe and Rosalie awesome and potential to explore Nick and Juliette being able to choose the Grimm lifestyle voluntarily. Babygrimm FTW!
  • Orphan Black - up to date and deeply invested, so many issues, so many questions, so much plot. Maslany was robbed at the Emmy’s
  • Teen Wolf - did not have to marathon as cupidsbow and I have a standing weekly TW watching date which also gives me a front row seat on the fabulous meta being produced
Movies
  • Guardians of the Galaxy - surprisingly good
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past - eh
  • Top Hat (Ginger Rogers & Fred Astaire) - adorable and fluffy
  • Casablanca - rewatching for the upteenth time

Movies
  • City of Bones - watchable, feels like a young woman's fantasy life all smushed together. I'm not opposed.
  • After Earth - stopped after 15 mins. I want to support this movie but it was too boring for me to watch.
Television
  • Arrow Season 2 - Ollie is still awful but the rest of the cast makes up for it
  • Beauty and the Beast (2012) - YOU ARE ALL FIRED, WHY DIDN'T YOU TELL ME THIS EXISTED? It's full of melodrama and ridiculous angst and lovely LOVELY female characters and plots that don't shame women and it has evil, lurking corporations.
  • Elementary - happens when I'm in the room, no objections and quite a lot of love for Watson.
  • Grimm Season 3 - still fun and Monroe is still awesome
  • Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D - too boring to watch, so sad. Holding out for a Peggy Carter series.
  • Orphan Black - GOLD, PURE GOLD.
  • Sleepy Hollow - on probation, but has many pleasing qualities
  • Supernatural Season 8 - so much better than seasons 6 & 7, it's like having an old friend back

  • Pacific Rim - I thought all I wanted was giant robots and dinosaurs but it turns out I also wanted it to make a little more sense. It's possible the mecha genre is always like this in which case please forgive my ignorance. Yes. One or more people who worked on Pacific Rim have either collaborated with Roman Polanski or publicly expressed support for him. Guillermo del Toro (Director)
  • Wolverine - Mmm, dead over-sexualised lesbians. I appreciated Wolverine giving up his mainpain, I liked some of the movie, I had low expectations which is always a good idea. Yes.One or more people who worked on The Wolverine have either collaborated with Roman Polanski or publicly expressed support for him. Hiroyuki Sanada (Shingen Yashida)
  • She Done Him Wrong - a total gem. Mae West is a fast talking unstoppable bombshell of wit and giant feathery outfits. No! None of the cast or crew of She Done Him Wrong have collaborated with Roman Polanski or publicly expressed support for him.
  • Seven Year Itch - tried very hard but a movie entirely about a creep is hard to take. Did not finish. Marilyn was adorable and the famous air vent scene surprisingly understated. No! None of the cast or crew of The Seven Year Itch have collaborated with Roman Polanski or publicly expressed support for him.

I've been missing out. Stars and

Romance and suspense in Paris, as a woman is pursued by several men who want a fortune her murdered husband had stolen. Who can she trust?

Charming, twisty and funny PLUS in the public domain so I am not contributing $ to the below.

Alas. Yes.One or more people who worked on Charade have either collaborated with Roman Polanski or publicly expressed support for him. Walter Matthau (Hamilton Bartholemew)

I was reminded at Swancon 2013 that I have yet to see this. Well have yet no more... or something.

Cute, funny and a welcome break from serious stuff. I am not going to critique because the point was to have a fun break.

No! None of the cast or crew of The Great Mouse Detective have collaborated with Roman Polanski or publicly expressed support for him.

Very entertaining, effort required to suppress disbelief at plot, characterisation and physics but don't let that deter you.

We are here for the muscley running, the ludicrously over the top vehicular chase scenes, and \o/

A nifty site that answers the question:

<input ... > collaborated with or otherwise supported Roman Polanski.

Thank you, I needed that and will use it.

Oh ugh.

Yes.

One or more people who worked on Iron Man 3 have either collaborated with Roman Polanski or publicly expressed support for him.

Ben Kingsley (The Mandarin)

Or, you know, into Star Trek: Into Whiteness.

I was entertained, but this isn't a great movie. It still feels like a lot of shout-outs pasted together with CGI and I didn't grow up on original Trek so while I appreciate a good remake, I also want it to have a point. Also people keep telling me original Trek was about pushing boundaries and that it was clever... I'm not seeing it here people.

I'm not all that invested in the trifecta of white, male lead actors playing Kirk, Spock and Bones. I'm keen on Uhura and Carol and would like to see more of them.

Fun, action-ey, liked the post-credits scene.

The usual feminist critique applies.

Deeply relieved by the handling of the Mandarin which I expected to be a racist clusterfuck. ETA Having now read [personal profile] wistfuljane's comments I spoke way too soon :(

More enjoyable than I expected. I find Batman is much more interesting when he's enigmatic and a bit fucked up than when he's a seething mess of manpain. He's also a lot less irritating. My issues, let me show them to you :p

I love how overdone this movie is, it's all very Dick Tracey and dramatic which really works when you have a dude running around dressed as a bat.

Photographer RPF starring RDJ and Kidman!

Turning her back on her wealthy, established family, Diane Arbus falls in love with Lionel Sweeney, an enigmatic mentor who introduces Arbus to the marginalized people who help her become one of the most revered photographers of the twentieth century.

This was visually gorgeous and subtle. I was pleasantly surprised. I appreciate it when marginalized people are shown as having rich lives and ongoing relationships. I also like seeing women grow as people.

It's been an uphill ride, Die Hard 5 was kind of terrible, GI Joe was fun, and this was a gem.

IMDB says: After R (a highly unusual zombie) saves Julie from an attack, the two form a relationship that sets in motion a sequence of events that might transform the entire lifeless world.

R's narrative is funny and wry, I'd say 'warm' but he's dead. It's a sweet post-apocalyptic romance that doesn't say anything interesting about boy-girl relations but does entertain.

Ridiculous and yet good fun, they took the time to give me a chance to like the characters and kept up a nice balance of humour and action.

I've not had anything to do with G.I. Joe before so the contrast between hyper technological US military people and mystical healing-wax bearing ninjas was a bit surreal.

  • Hobbit again last night with zorana - made better by giant beanbags. Still fun, Thorin's constant smouldering makes me giggle though.
  • Doing all the personality quizzes! Colour Personality Enneagram
  • OTW update: Five weeks so far… did I tell you I have a manifesto?
  • The Redcaps are blossoming again \o/ I also saw a tiny little cocoon - hard to photograph in the wind but so delicate! So precise!
Redcaps are starting to blossom Cosy little home

  • The Losers (again)
  • The Hobbit - first book I can remember my mother reading to me (I still have it), dear to my heart and I shall not be judging it.
  • Step Up, Step Up 2, Step Up 3 and Step Up 4 - which were terrible but enjoyable what with all the dancing.
  • The Big Chill (again)

Psychics stalking each other in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, the "mover" Nick Gant is contacted by the "watcher" Cassie Holmes to seek out the "pusher" Kira Hollies. She has just escaped from the Division, a shadowy governmental agency that chases the youngsters with abilities. When the trio is reunited, they join to other persons with ability to fight against the "pusher" Henry Carver and his men.

To be fair we started 40 mins in because [personal profile] maharetr could not face starting from the beginning again so it took me a little while to get up to speed and I probably (hopefully) missed some character development and maybe some plot but I'm not holding out for it. The best bit was after the movie when [personal profile] maharetr and I discussed how 'watcher' abilities might work and how to best evade them.

If you had nothing else to do and some sewing outstanding this is good background entertainment.

A tough U.S. Marshal helps a stubborn young woman track down her father's murderer.

I think a more accurate description would be a stubborn young woman bullies a horrible U.S. Marshall into letting her follow him as he tracks down her father's murderer.

Watched with [personal profile] maharetr because we'd heard it gave good female character. Yes, it avoided many horrible tropes and she was indeed determined, smart and fast talking. Despite this I didn't love it, i just liked seeing certain things not happen. This might be a cultural problem but I found the characters largely incomprehensible.

A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.

The plot is pretty average but Gina Carano plays the super soldier and her MMA skills make the fight scenes something special to watch. I get a lot out of watching her run like a dangerous person - so unlike most women running in movies. Haywire avoids many boring mistakes female action movies have to put up with - I particularly like the way her relationship with her father is handled.

Even better, IMDB says there is an untitled Adi Shankar Project slotted for 2015 and rumoured to be a female Expendables hopefully also casting Katee Sackhoff, Linda Hamilton (rumoured) and Pam Grier (also rumoured).

Made of awesome, loved so much about it I can't even start, will probably go see it again. Plotty, interesting, character driven. See it with a friend so you can talk about it after.

IMDB says: "In 2072, when the mob wants to get rid of someone, the target is sent 30 years into the past, where a hired gun awaits. Someone like Joe, who one day learns the mob wants to 'close the loop' by transporting back Joe's future self."

...which is all true but hey, so much more to enjoy including Joseph Gordon-Levitt weirdly made up to look more like Bruce Willis.

Things I am not cool with.

Spoilers )

Thoroughly worthwhile, many issues covered but told through the vehicle of actual people. I loved Deborah Mailman as Gail, she was fantastic. I also loved the Australian scenes, it reminds me of my grandparents.

Adorable, funny and interesting. Go see it.

IMDB says: A pair of young lovers flee their New England town, which causes a local search party to fan out and find them.

It doesn't mention they're about 12, quirky as hell and surrounded by a magical cast including Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton and Harvey Keitel.

Dire. I wanted so much more.

Slow and meandering with lots of stuff that didn't tie together or make sense. Snow White is inexplicably unicorn small furry animal catnip and remarkably fit for a gal imprisoned in a tower for years. I keep imagining Linda Hamiltonesque pull up scenes except with more leather pants and brocade.
