I just realised the Archive of Our Own ohloh page was out of date - not any more!

Now stay with me for a moment, ohloh is a place where open source software projects can register themselves and it gives us a chance to compare our projects, how long they live, how active they are, how much code they're producing and so on. As of today there are 538,687 projects registered (that's a lot). Within that community the AO3 is one of the largest open-source teams in the world, and is in the top 2% of all project teams on Ohloh is a relatively large team, putting this project among the top 10% of all project teams on Ohloh. (ETA: updated now I've aliased all the duplicate names which removed a good 10 - seems our devs like to contribute under multiple identities). For context, Mozilla is in position #1 on that list ;p

The AO3 team self identifies as 83% female, which, given that the Open Source community has something like 1.5% women participation (although I seriously hope things have improved over the last 5 years) is, well, fantastic.

For myself, being part of the project has been a source of passionate love, great companionship and constant learning. It was also an opportunity to do something I'm good at - and get better - that I could not get in my paid job. In my (new) paid job what I learned from the AO3 project has heavily influenced my knowledge, my skills and my confidence and it contributed significantly to my getting said new job.

I just want to stop for a moment and celebrate the drive, creativity and staying power of this project.

Brought to you by the amazing, dedicated volunteers who work on the AO3 and by you, the people in fandom who made this possible through your generosity in contributing to buy more servers.

You know that thing that happens when you've read something and you want to comment so bad but all you're going to say is "EEEE!" or something equally articulate because your brain is mush?

The AO3 proudly introduces kudos Kudos! ...for when your love has no words.

How time flies, it seems it was only recent that we were holding our breath waiting for the servers to arrive and making jokes about not being convinced they were really REALLY ours (or real, I was voting for a case of blueberry muffins until we got the photos).

Yet here we are a year (and a bit!) later with over 100,000 works in the AO3, over 10,000 users, more features and fixes and a never ending list of improvements we still want to make. I am in the fortunate position of being able to donate money, and if you are as well it would be very welcome; you'll be supporting a fantastic project.

of which the details are posted on the AO3 and we have SKINS \o/

...we also have the ability to download works in Mobi, ePub, PDF or HTML which is fantastic!

*runs around in gleeful circles*

PS: I have a couple of AO3 invite codes if anyone would like one *dangles enticingly*

Release Notes are on the AO3 and we stopped adding fixes because revision 2500 was such a nice, round number - our decision making process is highly sophisticated!

This adds the matching code for Challenge sign-ups, an awesome and complicated feature.

Dear People,

We're in stage one of developing skins and the equivalent of a style=light option for the Archive of Our Own (v1 now implemented) and we're looking for examples of complex works to test things on.

e.g. one with a chat log in the middle, one with sub-headings, one with fancy fonts, or better still, one short story with them all in, that we can use to test.
  •  Do people have suggestions of suitable works on the AO3?
  •  Does someone have the time to code something complex and leave it in the comments for me? Plot is optional!
The allowed HTML is currently: a, abbr, acronym, address, alt, b, big, blockquote, br, caption, center, cite, class, code, col, colgroup, datetime, dd, del, dfn, div, dl, dt, em, h1, h2, h3, h4, h5, h6, height, hr, href, i, img, ins, kbd, li, name, ol, p, pre, q, samp, small, span, src, strike, strong, sub, sup, table, tbody, td, tfoot, th, thead, title, tr, tt, u, ul, var, width BUT DO NOT LIMIT YOURSELF.

Love, Me

Release was deployed to Beta about 3 hours ago, Release Notes are on the AO3. *g* We talked it through before I went to sleep. I woke up and it was tested, deployed to Beta and the Release Notes were posted. *loves on this amazing team*
  • Fixes for some visual bugs (works, comments)
  • Performance enhancement (filters removed from search results and 1,000 works only limit removed)
Help wanted!

We now have 176 Google code issues with a status of DeployedToBeta and we need people to help close them. This is a task anyone can do (detailed explanation on the AO3):
  1. Look at the list of code issues and pick one you like the look of
  2. Go to the Archive of Our Own and confirm it’s there and working
  3. Leave a comment (you will need to sign in with a google account) - we’ll do the rest!
You can do as many or as few as you want and we will treasure every contribution.

Yea Gods, March 2010 is my two-year anniversary of involvement with the OTW and the Archive of Our Own. In this time I've worked with a wonderful team of people who have given me opportunities to grow and learn, and to use my knowledge and skills (for Good... for now). Thank you!

I've seen the AO3 grow from a private test server of baby-code with the ability to create an account and post a work (sort of), to a Beta site being used by almost 6,000 people (well, 5,813 as of this morning). We're still rolling out improvements and building an Archive that everyone can use, and we plan to expand into supporting fanart and vids in the future! We're going to continue to do everything we can to support and protect fanworks, and the vibrant community we're proud to be part of.

To keep this community (and our tech) thriving, we need your support - if you're in a position to donate a few bucks (or you know, enough to qualify for a cool, cool water bottle with the OTW logo) then now is an excellent time!

  • Our aloe has flowered! I’ve had one of these for years and I didn’t know they did that. This is exciting stuff; we taught that aloe to fear and distrust us and now I wonder if it’s desperately trying to reproduce in a last ditch attempt to survive. Why yes, I do anthropomorphise things.
  • AO3 Release 0.7.3 deploy is still in testing, OMG so much new stuff to try out!
  • Decided to go to ½ time for MBA rather than ¼ time but online enrolment system is fighting back. Oh Data Analysis and Decision Making I want you, why don’t you want me?
  • Note to self: when you were in the grip of work/hormone inspired depression and self pity you managed to write a 6, 9 and 24 month life-plan, a fair chunk of your Ada Lovelace Day draft post, some stuff best not talked about and an apology your mother totally deserved. Here’s to less self-absorbed misery in the future.
    • P.S. Your father may have had a point when he called you a drama queen.
    • P.P.S. Buy more chocolate.

My random OTW update post fortnightly (fortnightly!) meeting (Saturday 11pm -1:30am) – in which much was discussed and many plans were made.

We’re building up to another AO3 code drop!

*grins* While Jan/Feb was technically a slow patch with very few meetings and a chance for the ongoing 2009-2010 committee members to have a rest, this is not reflected in the material in this drop. I took advantage of the break and stopped haunting the chatrooms and keeping up to date on the chat transcripts. I also missed three meetings in a row due to technical difficulties and the need to sleep (shocking I know, anyone would think I didn't care). This left me feeling weirdly relaxed and out of the loop (in a good way) which was sort of true; I had no idea how much cool stuff was being done but I still knew when I had to do ‘things’.

Those ‘things’ are pretty variable:
  • I negotiate the Release schedule with everyone involved, a highly sophisticated process where I suggest dates and people tell me how to change them, the trick is to propose them confidently in the knowledge that they will always shift. I am the irritant upon which pearls grow!
  • I find out what code is incoming, when it’s expected to be on Test, how much testing time we need, and when we’d be likely to be ready to deploy it to Beta. This mostly involves hanging out and gossiping to likely suspects and trying to let as wide a group of people as possible what our plans are so they can tell me if there's a problem.
  • I do a sort of high level QA of the Release, I go through the commit log, the code issues raised and the Test Archive. This is mostly a process of confirming all changes are visible to the Testing team and collating everything into a set of Release Notes. Our poor Coders have to deal with me asking baffling questions like ‘that thing you committed, the one with the note that made perfect sense, what does it *do*?’ followed by ‘does the Testing Team know that?
  • I talk to Support so that when we update Beta they will know what people are talking about when we get support requests for the new features. I need to do this more and better methinks.
  • I also send out plaintive requests for volunteers to write help documents for new features ;) I get fabulous support on this, people wander into chat and say 'oooooh, they built an X, I'll write help documents for you' and make grabby hands.
It’s been fun! I keep ‘discovering’ new features, hitting capslock and shouting 'OMG SO COOL!' in the Coding Cantina. Thankfully people respond with \o/ when I squee rather than rolling their eyes at how behind I am :p

We’re neck deep in testing right now, the Testing Team did a complete regression sweep of the Archive and we also have 135 issues in Release 0.7.3 of which 69 are now tested and good to go. Meep. I may kick out the one about the button that doesn’t work on one admin page but only when using IE7, we can live without it for now :p

Thank you, thank to the people who volunteered to help out with the testing. If anyone has a sudden lemming like urge to volunteer as well I can promise periods of intense excitement (and, you know, periods of tedium) and sneak previews of new features. You also get an adorable team of passionate people who get praised for breaking things. Go on, you know you want to.

12pm - 1am but I had link problems and didn't attend. The transcript records many people introducing themselves - welcome new and old team members, I look forward to another year of manic activity, periodic terror and glee. The fabulous [personal profile] zooey_glass is taking on the role of chair - I have every reason to believe she will be fantastic and there's some creative re-shuffling of the committee structure planned.

I shall be release manager which I was already doing but it's now split off from the chair role and I'm looking forward to being able to focus on it. I'm also pleased and flattered people think this is a good idea (this may change in six months when everyone is cowering in fear and living in foxholes because I keep raving about deadlines and documentation).

I have cool stuff! I wheedled AO3 stats from [personal profile] elz (who was very generous with her time) back on the 22nd of Jan then failed to do anything with them so for the curious, here's the total counts for Category, Rating, Warning and Wordcount:

7 am Sunday morning and I missed three meetings while on holiday. OMG people were busy in my absence; the Yuletide code drop got HUGE and a bunch of really cool changes got made. We started inviting participants for Yuletide and posting has been busy! We also updated the tag counts and simultaneously borked the Post New form but let us not speak of that (it's fixed now). In the meeting we mostly worked through a bunch of issues and tried not to generate anything new since we do want some time off over Christmas.

Succession planning: I'm stepping down as AD&T chair in 2010. I will continue to serve on the committee and help support the new chair - we plan to train up multiple people capable of coordinating a large open source project team (my successor is awesome by the way).

AD&T Update: We'll meet once more for the 2009 term - on 2nd of January - then break for most of January. We've not taken a break since January 2009 and we're in danger of melting the entire team into an exhausted (but very pleased) puddle.

For some perspective, we've been quite busy in the last few months:
Deploy Schedule: None! We'll make plans when the committee starts up again in 2010 (if Yuletide needs us or if the whole AO3 borks we will respond as needed)

Support: Still operating over the break but please forgive minor delays

I am so proud of what we've achieved! I love the amazing people I am so fortunate to be working with and the community we are part of.

If there are things you want to do/say - feel free to share either in comments, or by volunteering, or whatever medium you're comfortable with. You are invited to this party :)

The AO3 Tag Wranglers are quite possibly too cool for this world and are writing fic illustrating and mythologising the work they are doing on the AO3. It is steampunk; rich and beautiful and should be read and loved.

I love it, and instead of packing and, you know, getting prepared for my trip I have been attempting to illustrate what the Wrangulator might look like.

7am Sunday to about 9:30 (sorry to everyone in Europe/UK who were at that meeting and thank you for all the highly productive not sleeping you are doing). We had a rather large number of issues to work through - mostly design questions collated from all the Support and Feedback we've received plus some Tag wrangler questions.
  • Deploy Schedule: Release is on Beta now and it's mighty fine if I do say so myself. The amount of coding and fixes that got created since we launched Open Beta is remarkable and they all got tested in time! The next deploy date is subject to change but will be within the next two weeks and will contain some of the code for Collections & Challenges (and a couple of fixes, if I put the kibosh on them I'll get pilloried :p).
  • Open Beta: Still ticking along nicely.
    • Code: we've fixed a lot of the most urgent problems and are quietly working on designs for half a dozen of the less urgent ones. The longer term changes will be for early 2010 though, we've only got 5 weeks left of 2009.
    • Invite schedule: we slowed to automatically issuing 30/day so as to give Support a chance to catch up (in preparation for bringing in Yuletide authors) and we'll leave it on that for the week of 22nd - 29th Nov then re-evaluate again.
  • Stuff coming up:
    • Yuletide: importing the Yuletide user table and inviting those users. I'm with [personal profile] astolat on this one *runs around in terrified circles*
    • Passwords: we'll add password validation for people updating their email addresses
    • Tag display: a maximum of 12 tags display on the works blurb, we'll increase this and add a 'more...' option to display all
    • Chapter numbering: we'll give people the option of overriding the automatic numbering for those who write prologues and epilogues
If there are things you want to do/say - feel free to share either in comments, or by volunteering, or whatever medium you're comfortable with. You are invited to this party :)
